Re: General UK Defence Discussion
Attempt what sorry I’m not following. Why would remove weapons and personnel costs that everyone else includes as well? Everyone? There are only a handful of nations with a UK sized nuclear deterrent. My point is that if the CASD is ever used it’s due to a failure of the conventional deterrent. Lik...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Leaving to one side the risk of alien invasion….. I do agree there isn’t much coherence to the current planning it’s far too ambitious, far too thinly spread and lacks focus. We can agree on that. RN has has enjoyed a recent reputation for competence when compared to the Army but that could now be a...

There’s quite a lot of ports and infrastructure around the Baltic and nordics and considering there Russians havent put Ukraines out of action and geographically and numerically there tiny by comparison I think we’re safe to assume there available. Probably better to never assume anything and plan ...

The next step needs to be a truly Chinook capable air-mobile version with reconfigurable modules for GMLRS, Brimstone, 105mm, CAMM, 81mm or 120mm mortar plus a highly protected 4x4 version with 30mm and javelin.
Make these the core the UK’s Rapid Reaction Forces.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
We can’t deploy and sustain a carrier in the region or any length of time and if there is one thing the region has its hundreds and hundreds of fast jets we don’t offer anything unique there. Again nonsense - the only real carrier force outside of the PLAN is the USN. The carriers will be very valu...

Because it centres it commitment on the carrier inserted Royal Marines. The MoD is not intending to enter a conflict in the Indo Pacific against a peer opponent without at least one UK CSG participating. The transport of vehicles is using the point class transports and disembarking at one of the ma...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Do we say it’s a scandal to have usmc aircraft and helicopters on our ships in much the same way? Yes, if the USMC had no LPDs, LHAs or LHDs it would be a scandal. They can operate from the carrier the bay and escorts they don’t need a lpd, they didn’t have one when they assaults the al faw at brig...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Well after the current type 26 and type 31 funding and there will be more funding for the escort fleet or there will be just 13 vessels. Absolutely and the next DS needs to realise that. It’s only enough to operate a single CVF , protect the CASD and maintain NATO commitments etc. If HMG really wan...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
Is this not how you would do such things in that part of the world load a company on voyager fly them to a close friend eg Australia and have them use the Australians equipment rather than spend months sending our own very limited ships all the way there. With both LPDs out of action until at least...

Completely agree, that’s why I wouldn’t do it.
Without further funding however, both in terms of vessels and manpower, extra frigates isn’t happening.

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
…we really need to start thinking about a RB2 upgrade Actually I think this a highly relevant point. I have never been a fan of upgrading the RB2’s as IMO they should be concentrated on UK EEZ protection plus Falklands etc after the RB1s decommission around 2028. However if funding is not going to ...

What we know about the FCF is that 8 x LSU's of 250 troops will be built around the 8 companies of 40 & 45 Cdo they have been trilling new light vehicles like Polstar plus not long back a 200 million program was set out for a new CIC All of which could change tomorrow. It comes across as ideas ...

As discussed previously.

Theory becoming practice. Looks like a ski ramp and 200m deck would be required for take off with a full payload.
