Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
I can remember reading about the F35 back in the 1990's its now 2015, due to be in service with the RAF in 2018. That makes it at least 25 years old design wise. Thinking how computers and mobile phones have evolved in the last 25 years I wonder what is being thought of today. Some of the electronic...

With regards to nuclear reactors there is the huge problem and cost of disposing of it. They haven't figured out what to do with the nuclear waste we have already got.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
The f35b carries a large logistics foot print. As well as fuel, armament , it has a bigger maintenance footprint due to its specialist systems and stealth coatings. The ship has to be capable of carrying out these tasks . I understand that there will be on board, flight simulators and mission traine...

OK found it 7000 kits of useful looking personal protection gear, rucksacks and body armor etc. My question is why only 7000 kits there are supposedly 82000 troops in the regular army, plus 30000 reserves plus spares etc. Like the idea Jonas of a thread for desider.

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)
Thanks Gabriele, for that information. I was aware of the rolling landings on land. Doing on a ship that is moving as well as pitching up and down is a little more difficult. The SRVL software developed by Qinetic using a Harrier jump jet is supposed to help automate this process. Your news on RAF M...

There is a ski jump in the USA but I don't think they are using it yet. Also I don't know if the SRVL software has been fully developed yet.

@Tony Williams.
A lot of people may agree that three is a minimum number of vessels, its not going to happen as there is no bottomless pit of money to pay for them. As it stands we may struggle to get enough aircraft for one ship due to the high costs involved.

Re: General Election 2015 thread
Rory Stewart defence select committee chairman and strong government defence critic has been moved to DEFRA as a minister. He strongly was in favour of the government spending more on defence. I hope this is not a sign of cuts to come. As for Farage he states.... "I resigned. I said I’d resign....

Should the story be true there will be the cost of integrating UK specific weapons, and other systems and they wont come cheaply.

Re: The Falkland Islands
Its so easy to learn lessons then over a period of time forget them again. Certainly am surprised that no water tight bulkheads existed in these ships. I remember being in an equipment room when a couple of Halon fire bottles went off due to an electrical fault. I had seconds to get out or die from ...

Re: Future UK Maritime Patrol Options
The story is also doing the rounds via the daily mirror. As there is no precise details of any order, it could be a bit early to speculate. But if there is an ounce of truth in the story then surely its good news as opposed to hearing about yet more cuts to defence.

I found the report of Hms Coventry very interesting. So are we saying that there was no water tight integrity between compartments, as well as the fact that smoke and toxic fumes were vented from supposed sealed off spaces hindering any damage control activities.

SNP get a lot of seats for their share of the vote. This Sturgeon woman is going to cause a few problems despite the Conservative majority. Cameron will no doubt end up offering them more devolution to keep them quiet.

The thought of Labour propped up by the Scottish voters getting in gives me the creeps. Traditionally I would be voting for the Conservatives, but remembering all the broken promises of the last election including a referendum on the Lisbon treaty, I just don't know where my cross will end up today....

Interesting to see UKIP getting a large slice of the poll. The BBC has them at 13 percent. It would be a shock to the establishment if they get more votes than the polls suggest.

Re: Type 23 Frigates (Duke Class) (RN)
I read that when they start building the T26 Frigates they are going to take some of the armament off the T23 ships and additionally the Sonar and Radar equipment will also be transferred. The radar is currently being upgraded to Artisan, which is also fitted to other ships in the fleet. I guess the...

Re: MARS (tide class) RFA vessels
Thanks for that information 36 Phalanx systems is a lot more than I imagined. As well as dry stores and I agree with you more space other than a few shipping containers would be needed, besides the tanker crew needs to eat. There is also the need for carriage of spare parts and ammunition for the gu...

I am assuming that these will be fitted for and not with Phalanx, as is the case with a lot of naval vessels these days. This begs another question exactly how many Phalanx systems does the RN have in storage ready to be used? Does it have enough to fit all of the current fleet? Would the ISO contai...
