Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
For the war fighting fleet I would have: - 2 CSGs (2carriers + 2 SSNs + 4 T45s + 4 T26s) to give coverage in the Atlantic Assign frigates/tanker to nato standing forces I believe that the RN can afford to be more ambitious. I see the future force structure as three tiers: - Low level forward presen...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The Ukraine conflict needs to be a wake up call that Russia will increasingly become belligerent and aggressive on its western flank, whilst building stronger relationships with China, Iran and consolidating its control over former central USSR states in central Asia. This is the end of a start that...

Very short sighted - forward basing both Tankers alongside the Rivers would give a significant presence at a very reasonable cost.

Re: Brexit - The UK's EU Referendum & Withdrawal
Brexit limits trade with Europe in the short term - shock horror… not. The test of Brexit though isn’t the short term it’s the first 10-20 years, and will depend largely on whether the UK makes use of the agility in trade and policy making that it didn’t have whilst in the EU. Remainers will remain ...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
Completely agree that to be relevant the BCT concept needs to be trialled (worts and all) quickly and then iteratively improved. Deploying a heavy BCT will be a good litmus test on how much on paper is reality. Personally, I would also focus creating on a 2nd Air Manoeuvre BCT (by removing an infant...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
In terms of deterring Russia along the middle of NATOs eastern land border most of the heavy lifting needs to come from Poland and Germany, with support from France. Even the US will not be a main player longer term. The UK can play a supporting niche role providing specialist skills / forces, but i...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
Any ideas/evudence that the recent events in Ukraine will lead to HMG/MoD to reverse the announced cuts to the Army? Is that the answer? I can see the argument to keep more CR2s, but what are we expecting this slightly larger force to do that the current envisaged force cannot? Looking at things in...

Re: Franco-German-Spanish FCAS/SCAF Programme News and Discussion
Even if Spain could afford the F35 (which it can't), the only way it would make sense is if they bought F35Bs for the air force also. But given the Spanish air force has less than 70 Tiffies and a similar number of Hornets this doesn't make much sense either, even the RAF couldn't afford to operate ...

Re: Scott Class Ocean Survey Vessel (RN)
There's more to HMS Scott than meets the eye, but one thing I've wondered is if they should add a winch deck to the stern and free up the foredeck to carry additional offboard platforms. Would be a good interim solution IMO as they work on MROSS (which will hopefully be a class of two, possibly thre...

Yes Eurofighter will cover them for some time a limited buy of say 25 F-35b to cover off the Harrier for the navy seems a good option to me this would be a bit like the UK typhoon and F-35b until the next gen fighter comes along They have a dozen harriers, its nearly pointless considering the expen...

Re: Scott Class Ocean Survey Vessel (RN)
https://www.navylookout.com/royal-navys-ocean-survey-vessel-hms-scott-extended-in-service/ HMS Scott decommissioning has been pushed to 2023. A good decision, and I hope they will extend further until a coherent strategy is in place including the assets that are needed to cover this and similar roles.

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Is there a reason why an SSN couldn't be the command & control platform? I would think it would be also, the concern as you point out is numbers. If you need a SSN you aren't freeing one up. I agree with your concerns on diverting budgets, but my view is that done in the right way (utilizing CO...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
This is where the MoD believes in the level of AI it will be able to attain over the next decade or so. Whether they are being unrealistic is a matter for discussion but they are betting the future of the Armed Forces on such a break through, not realising their will be few if ay real savings. I th...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Well they used to be able to do SSBN, SSN and SSK. Are you suggesting that today’s RN personnel are less capable? If it is lack of a resource which may be needed, then it should be provided. Perhaps you think that 24 x SSN are more likely to be provided by HMG than 12 x SSN and 12 x SSK. If so, the...

I did not say what size SSK either. It is just that this thread seems to becoming derailed into “Miniature SSK” or nothing. In this day and age, just tell me who it is would wish to (or be able to) serve on such a Midget vessel and for how long. It would be different (for us) in a long period of ho...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Repulse-san, overall, I think a good discussion is held. Agree - it’s a fascinating area and one I believe the RN should be focusing on more. If landing SF in Red sea, Persian Gulf, Gulf of Oman, or somewhere in Norway (after Russian invasion), do we really need SSN to support the operation? Its ne...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
But, small torpedoes could disable a HVU. Not sure. I would say that a surgical strike to hit the rudder or propellers could easily disable a HVU. My whole point is "freeing up Astutes from the theater". One Astute will be around Britain supporting SSBN, and another will be with CSG (when...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
There’s been a lot of media recently on HMS Spey and Tonga, but not much on HMS Tamar apart from a press announcement a couple of weeks ago about contributing to North Korean sanctions monitoring. Interesting to see then that according to AIS that 3 days ago it was between Japan and Taiwan in the Ea...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
Main task of miniSSK (other than SF operation and/or laying sensors/mines) = for torpedoing, for me, is "threatening" HVU and enemy logistic shipings. The main aim is to accumulate enemy ASW capabilities to "free" our/allie's main punch = CSG. Also, miniSSK is mini, and cannot w...

Re: Royal Navy SSK?
A mini modular submarine is exactly what the RN needs IMO - as @Donald-san points out it will be a very long time before RoE allow an attack to take place without a human making the decision. One design that I always liked was the Sea Dagger concept: https://www.naval-technology.com/wp-content/uploa...
