Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Here's the delivery timeline again...any changes since last time in Red So of the UK's '48' here's the status: Note - Delivery is 'usually' a minimum of 2 years after order. Delivered to date LRIP 1 - April 2007 - No UK Orders, (US F-35A only) LRIP 2 - July 2007 - No UK Orders (6 F-35B for USMC, fir...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Unless I'm imagining it, there were statements between 2015 and 2019 (the summer of three DefSecs) about how F-35 procurement was being brought forward to deliver 48 by 2025 theoretically permitting up to 24 UK aircraft at sea Actually the intention was to deliver all 48 by 2024. The final 'block' ...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

Negotiating tactics most likely for the jets after our initial 48. Integration of Meteor statement was also interesting I wonder if things are not going to plan, we haven't heard about it since the test examples were delivered over a year ago (not that I expected every detail to be listed). Absolut...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

This is disappointing that this has had to be stated loud and clear....but also encouraging that it has been stated in no uncertain terms by the Secretary of State for Defence. The fact that he actually made the statement publically sounds like there has already been some serious concerns and/or arg...

I wouldn't necessarily go that far, just a Phalanx and the 30mm. Merlin would be needed however.

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

Hypersonic missile (Mach 7-10) >> Super sonic missile (Mach 3) > stealthy-agile cruise missile >> TLAM > Harpoon. If you're talking cost and survivability only I'd put Harpoon ahead of TLAM. It's more expensive, plus is more likely to get a hit against an enemy vessel as it performs terminal manoeu...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

But, adding maneuver capability is not difficult. It is difficult and very expensive. The Pershing II was the first to combine manoevering and an RF sensor in one package. That was aimed at stationary targets however. To manoeuvre in such a way to not mask the sensor or make it more susceptible to ...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

Maybe I'm reading this wrong but "no Exocet's fired in combat" ??? UK and France have never fired a heavy weight Anti ship missile in combat ever, from air, submarines, land or ships. Despite many thousands of Martel, Exocet, Sea Eagle, Sub-Harpoon and Harpoon having been in the inventory...

Re: Multi-Role Ocean Surveillance Ships

Don't count your chicken yet, with a non deck penetrating 76mm available they might still! Thats true. It might be bonkers but I was actually thinking it would make a lot of sense for the RN to make them a little more 'fighty'. If it can carry a Merlin, and stream a decent towed array it would make...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

That may make the UK happy but certainly not the French, who are the ones wanting a supersonic weapon system. Such a move could finish FC/ASW as a joint project. This is the actual problem at present. Both sides want different things....I think the UK is right. A stealthy, subsonic, long range (100...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

Are there effective defense measure against hypersonic missile in cheap? If so, why an anti-ship ballistic missile is an issue? PrSM is exactly an anti-ship ballistic missile. A high supersonic high diver is actually the threat that Aegis was designed to deal with 40 years ago...Patriot was shootin...

Might be a template for what the RN are looking for...due for delivery in 2025. Disappointingly for the Italian's though there is no 76mm guns all over...they must be losing their touch.. https://www.navalnews.com/naval-news/2021/06/t-mariotti-shipyard-to-build-italian-navy-special-diving-operations...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

As far as I am aware there is zero effort going on to fit this missile into any kind of VLS for shipborne use. Nor will there be, the missile is unsuitable. Speculation that it will become a RN weapon is therefore totally absurd. It would also make a terrible anti-ship missile as against any capabl...

Just teasing.
I suspect RR are nailed on for propulsion as the South Korean's already use MT-30, and the Trieste is MT-30 powered.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Just posted this in the SK thread. Just superficial similarities (look at elevator positioning, island positioning and VL farm). To be honest I suspect that this is a fair bit less efficient than the QE design, bit fightier though... https://twitter.com/TheSubHunter1/status/1402625474623246338?ref_s...

RAF don't like working at the weekends Fear of working at weekends would be vastly overshadowed by a trip to Ibiza.... It could just be as simple as the USMC maintenance guys stayed with the Carrier and they needed to fly some maintainers in from the US or Marham to do the work. From the time to ge...

A C-17 from Brize Norton flew out to Ibiza on the 7th with spares. The USMC aircraft was repaired and flew out to the CSG yesterday. Bit concerning that it look 6 days for the spares to materialise...only 1 day to get them fitted, which indicates it wasn't a serious problem. https://twitter.com/smrm...

Unlikely, it would have been seen being trucked through Portsmouth and craned on. Also we've only got 4, they're all at Culdrose, the training value we get from them is done there. You wouldn't get a huge amount more from craning one onto the carrier. But you know what....I might be completely wron...

Much like ground-launched SDB2? No. It's powered for one. Some sort of MMW or IR seeker head and targeting algorithm and much greater range.
