Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

as a 2D radar it can only track bearing and range. ... and velocity, don't forget. It's true that 2D radars don't determine altitude, without a secondary 2D operating in the vertical plane (most air traffic control radars are 2D with a height-finding secondary - it's much cheaper apparently). I don...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

A couple of points of information: the B2s do have an Ops room. It's described as small and I've no idea how many terminals it can fit, but it exists; the Scanter 4100 can track up to 100 air targets (up to supersonic aircraft) and a total of 500 targets in all out to 90 miles and 30,000ft - it can ...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

personally not convinced on the short term need for the 40mm As I say, only if confirmed as secondary armament for the T31, I wouldn't want to see it introduced specifically for the RB2s. I would agree with future hulls being equipped with a 57mm, if installed at build, as significant space is requ...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

Agreed that the level of up-arming will be determined by the tasks that the B2s are asked to undertake. Currently we have retained the B1s for UK EEZ patrol. They, clearly, do not need up-arming in any way to carry out that role. Of the B2s, from recent announcements/ speeches etc, it looks as if on...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

If the RN follows through with its declared intent to deploy the RB2s worldwide, then it is likely that they will, at the very least, be transiting through some fairly risky area. In order to do that without themselves requiring an escort, a simple change to a main gun that is effective out to the v...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

It sits somewhere between rim-116 and ESSM so it’s classification isn’t exactly clear. For certain scenarios it does seem to be a very good solution but will be in such small numbers on type 31 In missile terms, it sits much closer to ESSM than RIM-116. In software terms it sits closer to PAAMS tha...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

We know the ASW capability has already been compromised compared to the T23 GP's with the A140's CODAD propulsion and non acoustically optimised hull plus there is still no confirmation that a hull mounted sonar will even be fitted but now we learn that a proper medium calibre gun in the 4.5" ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

But its still the main gun on the T45 and will likely remain so for the ships service life. Thats another 20 years. True, but we will only have 6 systems to support, with another 13 to cannibalise for spares etc. At some point I would think that they may be replaced by a 57mm as "better for it...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Let's get 11 sets, not only 5. Maybe we should order the ships before we start ordering the ASMs. Then build them. Then equip them. I'm told it works better that way Hey, did they confirm that the T31 will have 57mm and 40mm? When/where? Not confirmed, though strongly hinted at, according to the ST...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Similarly the choice of Thales TACTICOS, while I’m sure it is perfectly good, is a questionable choice from a standardisation point of view. But an excellent choice from an exportability point-of-view. It's a popular CMS world-wide. I’m not sure of the wisdom of adding so many new systems to the Ro...

The STRN graphic also notes the Thales UMS 4110 HMS as a possibility - seems like a fairly capable system (used on Horizon and FREMM)

I would have thought that a wheeled 120mm like the Centauro II for the Strike Brigades would be a higher priority than 120mm Ajax

Five is what was expected. Good to hear that eight is a possibility. Hopefully experience will show that they are very capable ships and the second batch will a) be confirmed and b) be revised upwards from three to five However, that said, eight T31 would be good, along with eight T26 and eventually...

The Harpoons sit where the crane is on the B2s, so you would lose the ability to self-load containers.

I think that they are aimed at broadly the same market, but that the S100 is a newer system, so may have some tecnological advantages.

True, but surely that kind of money isn't kicking about down the back of the sofa? There's little benefit for new build here, these aren't high performance platforms, so the Nave should take advantage of the cheap second hand market. Even a new Point class hull wouldn't be that expensive, nor shoul...

Nice spot. So £1.6b sounds feasible, with, as you say, a build cost in the £350-400m range and very approximately one third of the budget (say £400-500m) for support, training etc

That was my immediate thought. But, as I said, there's no guarantee that the union chap had the exact figure, he may have been including years of support work in that figure as well,, since continuity would be important from the workforces perspective

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

While I would be quite (pleasantly) surprised to see the main gun being changed on the B2s, there is room for a non-deck-penetrating system, with a modest magazine capacity, to be retro-fitted without any major structural changes. Personally, I think there is a great deal of room for improvement wit...
