Re: The war in Ukraine

Well if you want to be strictly true we haven’t seen any major tank battles in Europe or Ukraine. Seen plenty of tanks being ambushed in city’s and built up areas, stuck in the mud or picked off in the open with precision drones or artillery but haven’t seen any massed charges of scores of tanks at...

Re: MBDA Brimstone Missile (RAF)

In the same way that Brimstone would have previously required you to have a Typhoon on hand... Which was rather my point. Wildcat with Sea Venom or LMM is good, giving the capability to engage targets at distance. However it cant be guaranteed to be available when required, a shipborne system gives...

It only serves that purpose if the ship has a Wildcat available its in the air and is fitted with Sea Venom. Hardly a 24/7 capability.

Spartan ideal for moving anti-tank or MANPAD teams around, possible intended for Starstreak.

Re: The war in Ukraine

Unfortunately the video ends before we see the final result of the engagement, (one could ask why it ends at that particular point?) so its unclear how effective the fire actually was. However in general a 30mm APDS round should have little trouble penetrating the rear armour of most if not all MBTs...

Wasn't the hull of the K9 based on that of AS90? What would be the difference between the K9 and an updated AS90?

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Entirely incorrect. The army has very clear standards and also must consider the HSE limitations as a duty of care. Well the reports up thread only mention Health and Safety at work regs, nothing specific to AFVs! However lets assume the Army has very clear standards for noise and vibration on AFVs...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

I should first say I have no scientific information to go on, but I would be very surprised if the Rarden cannon presented a problem on CVR(T) or Warrior. Not only where the working parts pretty well enclosed the spent cases where ejected outside of the turret. The co-ax however is a different matte...

Re: The future form of the Army

BRIGADE COMBAT TEAMS. Deployable forces are being re-modelled around Brigade Combat Teams (BCTs), creating more self-sufficient tactical formations and providing more options for decision makers. BCTs integrate the full range of capabilities but at the lowest possible level including artillery, un-...

I’m convinced that they mostly exist as a kind of slang to identify outsiders to the group. Or just to baffle outsiders. I have to admit they can be handy abbreviations, however their are so many with each "group" having their own bespoke set, (which constantly changes) that it becomes im...

All the bloody acronyms they use serves to confuse as much as clarify.

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Given that when Ajax was down selected their was not even a prototype, just ASCOD, and even when ordered some 5 years latter still no sign of Ajax itself, that was high risk. Selecting CV90 then or now seems like a much safer bet. Ideally what you want is something fully up to spec and properly test...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

During any given operation by tracked heavy units, 25% are down for maintenance to the vehicle and its tracks especially. You have misread the article. What it actually says is that the mean rate of failure is four times higher for heavy forces equipped with Challenger and Warrior than that of ligh...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

That explains why we haven't seen much of SRVL, though they seem happy enough to perform RVL on normal runways. Just as Joint Force Harrier was a mistake, sharing F35b between the RN and RAF (with the RAF having control of the aircraft) is a cop out and can only lead to problems. The F35b should be ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)

Is it curious that members of the armed forces are able to in this report decline to be tested ? I found that rather odd, for two reasons first that they could refuse and second why they would. "All 310 individuals exposed have been offered a vibration assessment, with around 125 having so far...

Interesting comparing the wakes of the ships the Izumo class appears to create a lot of disturbance in its wake compared to the Q.E class ,is this something detectable? Surprising how minimal QEs wake is compared with the other vessels present, I'm sure this should tell us something , not sure what...

Javelin was faster than that , and that is a missile I have "fired", the training launcher, which was a pain as once the missile left he launcher it became very front heavy and you had to gather things up and put the crosshairs back on the target very quickly. Even harder with Blowpipe wh...

Not how I interpreted it. On trigger press batteries come on line gyros spun up and front end cap ejected by pressure build up, what caused the pressure build up? Didn't explain. 0.45 secs after trigger press 1st stage motor ignition and launch. In truth the video doesn't make it very clear, it give...

The problems with headsets in the report up thread have existed for a long time. Indeed when Challenger was introduced new kit was issued and hearing tests implemented because of excessive engine noise. However if problems have been reported concerning Ajax it must mean that the noise must be notice...

Looks weird like a passing tree would knock it off. Not impressed. They can do better. I'm with you on that. Its much bulkier than I thought it was. While I can just about see the utility of a self propelled mortar being able to fire on the move, for a long range artillery piece I really don't see the point.
