Re: Type 23 Frigate (Duke Class) (RN) [News Only]
While that does show the need for additional protection, over and above that of the frangible launch tube covers, it also illustrates the problem with the mushrooms. In wartime threats can appear suddenly with little warning, so do you remove the mushrooms in order to react quickly to threats, riski...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
- from “Sustainment Concept of Support: Tactical-Level Sustainment for Army 2020” I must admit the document I looked at was rather old, adding the additional supply companies will help, however they are not going to sustain 30 days of operations.* However long they can sustain themselves they will ...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
A wide statement; how does that compare with them deploying with 30 day self sufficiency? 30 days was the standard NATO figure for its forces during the Cold War, not sure if that's still the case. It was however a total of all available supplies, rather than those available at formation level. Whe...

Re: Boxer / Mechanised Infantry Vehicle (MIV)
Why? We can read (on the interwebs ) about what a Stryker bde needs - and importantly the fulfilment parts all belong, organically, to the bde when it gets deployed . Whatever logistic units are contained within a Stryker Brigade are only a small part of the total logistic effort that goes into sup...

So who are Triumph Subsea Services? What their website does tell us is that they seem to have ordered or intend to order a lot of vessels and other related equipment. What it doesn't tell us is what are the services they supply and who they supply them to. In fact it appears they don't supply any s...

Re: Brexit - The UK's EU Referendum & Withdrawal
I should perhaps have made it clearer what I was replying to which was not about those who are already living in the EU whether retired or working, whose position I believe has been sorted out. Rather it was to the following:- That's wonderful and all, but utterly irrelevant because the question is ...

Re: Royal Marines
While the ATMP would have no problems towing a 120mm mortar, (it has been used to tow the Light Gun), the problem of mounting it on the back deck would be one of space. I'm not sure their would be the room for the crew to effectively operate the mortar, leaving aside any problems of recoil. Mind you...

£ 2.3 bn to get two Strike bdes stood up (of course many other things will be required, in addition to kit in existence). The point being that what monies will be needed to keep two other (AI) bdes in shape thru Ch3 + Warrior will need to be compared to this expenditure... and of course come in bel...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
Just speculation on my part, but I would think the MOD would have included an OSD in the requirements documents in order to ensure that their would be continued support through the life of vehicle. As we know Out Of service Dates are somewhat flexible, they are basically a planning tool and we know ...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)
The CR2 in your picture is quite literally demonstrating the benefits of weapon depression in a hull-down, open-country scenario... Yes and Challenger has 10 degrees depression, but why not more? Because more would require an increase in the height of the turret. Indeed Soviet/Russian tanks have le...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)
Designers quite literally put it as low as possible, there really is no justification for putting it any higher than is absolutely needed to maintain 360 coverage and depression angles. As I see it their are two main reason for the height of the weapon mount; 1 To allow for the maximum depression i...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)
So spot it .. That's rather too easy. Their is the orange reflector which catches the eye, the uniform colour, obvious edges including the road wheel, topped off by the black weapon and mount. In truth from distance it wouldn't be that obvious simply because its positioned against a suitable backgr...

I bet that's fun to fit!
Then its spoilt by having a 2' tall weapon mount stuck out the top for all to see. Still could have been worse, like the RWS on top of Ajax[s turret.

To give an idea of what MVEE and its forerunners did, this by TD may be useful, a good read regardless.

Without the expertise and farcicalities of somewhere like MVEE I wonder how the MOD selected GD for Scout and LD for WCSP.

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)
With the loss of most of the R & D capability within the MOD, both expertise and facilities, they are very much reliant on industry. Which is why I suspect WCSP has to meet over 2000 requirements, an extraordinary number in my opinion. Obviously the MOD doesn't want to get caught out as they wer...

Re: Brexit - The UK's EU Referendum & Withdrawal
I think John Major had a better idea: two-stage referenda, so that in the final stage you actually know what you are voting for, rather than as shown here (took a year for people to slowly start to realise that reality looked different from fiction): Didn't we go over the idea of a second referendu...
