Re: Section infantry weapons

Yes but only makes sense if we move to the 120 mm mortar for Coy, Bn, and mechanised units and issue this at Plt level as a 2 man fire team attached to the standard 3 x 8 +4 Plt from the heavy support coy. Otherwise we have 2 light mortars (81mm , 60mm) with overlapping roles. Also, if we switch to...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

My sort of dream team Strike artillery: 2-3x turntable 120mm mortars per coy 6-9x turntable mortars per Bn, not a platoon but a mortar company with loggy platoon 18-24x turreted 155mm, akin to G6. Artillery battalion with all the whistles and bells and first and foremost logistical battery!! You can...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Yes, support teams have to rest and rearm, but are they on the same cycle as the rifle companies? Keep the support at a higher level and you can attach to lower level or come together for more concentrated effect Disperse the teams throughout the rifle companies and you can’t redeploy them en masse...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

I’m not sure about this company level business, when you can concentrate at battalion for training purposes then attach to sub units as required As a commander I'd rather have my very own mortars that attend battalion's common mortar training every now and then but spend most of the time with the c...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

IMHO, 60 mm for platoon/company level, 81 mm for battalion level and 120 mm for brigade level- light forces. On the other hand, especially in mechanised units, having a 120 mm in a battalion level would be a good choice. That is debateable. By brigade level light forces I assume you mean atleast 16...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

Obviously best case would be all four, 81-105-120-155. Finland is moving to 81-120-155 in the near future. Why keep the 81mm? We have 81mm at company level where they are the superior choice. Having firing units down to coy level we have much better ability to support combat in large area versus ha...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

I don't think there's anyone on this planet could legitimately look at the Royal Artillery's capabilities right now and say with any sanity that sticking to just 81mm and 105mm is the best way forward. One look at Ukraine will evaporate that thinking in an instant. I would say it depends on the con...

With the mortars, when do they go from logistics hungry to excessively logistics hungry? What defines when they become excessive?
That depends on the situation.

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

while a turntable mortar may be cheaper, it is limited. A turret mounted mortar, such as NEMO, has advantages in that it can be used for direct fire as well, plus it’s under armour. Seems to me that’s more valuable for strike since they’re supposed to be moving around, isolated, in unsecured locati...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments

I’m sure that I’ve asked before, but why do we need this? Why do we need to encumber our light forces with bigger and heavier ordnance, and bigger and heavier logistics demands? Because of firepower and logistics go hand in hand? This must be a rhetorical question. Where is the gap in logistics? Is...

https://ukdefenceforum.net/viewtopic.php?f=42&t=376&p=93270#p93270 We need to make a step change in the weight of artillery we use with the 120mm Mortar replacing the 81mm weapon at Battalion level in most units and replacing the 105mm Light Gun with a highly mobile, possibly air transporta...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Agreed, the default should be a simple turntable mortar, ideally 120mm being vehicle mounted. This is what I strongly believe the UK should be looking at, retaining the 81mm for light forces, but even they could have a vehicle mounted 120mm weapon using the JLTV for example or the Viking in the cas...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Well the video isn't the best but it does give a good idea of what is out there regarding 81mm and 120mm mortars that could be mounted on the Boxer or even the MRV(P)/JLTV. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pK1yUjmdv50 Obviously the Russian systems are more an example of what the opposition could be ...

Re: DENMARK

Most vehicle mounts now do in order to mount the weapon on smaller and lighter platforms. The simple Tube/Bipod/Base Plate type still has its use when ground fired and needs to be transported. By the way to any Western nations who use the simple type use the sort of carriage that was used by the So...

I know Piranha 5 isn't small, but that 120mm isn't rocking it too much either. Does it have a substantial recoil attenuation system?
I think all modern systems do have some sort of recoil attenuation system.

One every soldiers' weapon that I think is somewhat underestimated is the humble Antioch hand grenade. Nowadays they come in all shapes, sizes and warheads. You got blast, frag, blastfrag, incendiary, modular. You can stack up modules to make a half a kilo blast grenade or have a small under 200gr f...

Re: AS-90 Self-Propelled Gun (Army)

155 K 83 used to have 25 liter chamber before the 1997 upgrade, I believe. Strange, then, that the latter (which is actually a different design rather than an upgrade) has had "blow up" problems when the former (please compare my piccie link from wiki; SADF to FDF SA guns... identical?) b...

IIRC the SA[DF] guns have 25 liter chamber. Identical (err, in volume ;) ) to the ones in Finnish SA service... by any chance? There is a patent on this, available in the public domain... over and above "state secrets". Now, we could go into folklore, with what happened in the Indian fiel...

Re: AS-90 Self-Propelled Gun (Army)

Wonder why the copies that India have made of the South African Denel design (that was competing in one of the umpteen field gun competitions) keep blowing up... it is their 3rd "design" now, on the go - or trials, rather Most likely due to bad materiels or engineering otherwise. Also IIR...
