Think it might have been Gerry Kyd that said they would be bringing 7 F-35 with them for Westland 19. Maybe beefed up at times with some USMC jets for familiarisation training.Scimitar54 wrote:Why 7 x F35B?

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Look like QNLZ CIP is coming to an end soon. Anyone know what she has planned next. I'm assuming she is going to sea before Westlant 19 in the summer. Maybe some FOST training? On the subject of Westlant 19, any thoughts on the composition of the Task group? As it has a more operational bias to it I...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I do find the QEC lack in organic EW somewhat concerning She has absolutely no onboard EW detection equipment and has to rely on escorts, aircraft, satellite or intelligence to cue her to react to an inbound missile attack to conduct ASMD countermeasures . All ok in theory. But in a very heavily clu...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
The ships sonar has the submarine contact range and bearing Does it? In this instance I suspect the only data the ASW officer has with reasonable accuracy is bearing. Yes it does. The principle of active sonar - you transmit a sound wave, it bounds off the target back to the receiver. There's your ...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
"cued by ship's sensors", in an indirect fashion of course, owing to the missing data link. The Wildcat drops a torpedo somewhere in the rough area, and whilst it probably has very little chance of hitting, it's probably good enough to scare the sub off for a day. Why do you need a datali...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
Anybody finds this strange? "The destroyer used her sonar and Wildcat helicopter – armed with Sting Ray torpedoes – to hunt the Trafalgar-class boat , which in turn sought to get Diamond in her periscope cross-hairs without being noticed, a challenge made harder by the near-glass like state of...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Work on HMS Prince Of Wales Jetty has started. Is that to be the new southern end of Victory Jetty? It'll block the Camber and King's Steps. Already a tight squeeze in an out for small boats. I think this is actually just a dolphin and not part of a bigger jetty. Just for the carriers stern or head...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Wonder if Tidespring is going with her. Had her tracking south in The Irish Sea then she switched her AIS off. Although Queen Elizabeth and T23 escort have the range to get over there easily, QNLZ charging around getting wind over the deck for the F-35B trials might need a lot of juice PS I notice t...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I think the idea mooted by some of just 'bolting on' a CAPTAS winch etc is pie in the sky. Unless a hull is designed from the bottom up to be capable of taking the stresses and strains of towing something that long there is risk of a failure of the hull. HMS Lowestoft and the Towed Array Leander hul...
