Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
So it appears that the folly of such an underspecced hull (some here might say oversized OPV+) in a more malign world than when the spec was conceived has been realised. Luckily then, or through good judgement, they specified a hull that could be upspecced without complications. The Treasury under ...

PS A comment on UKDJ speculates they may want to test with overcharges which sounds like it makes sense. In which case, the UK ranges will definitely not be certified for.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
The phalanx haven't been on PWLS for quite a while now. As far as I remember, they were removed when she was in Rosyth, as she would be in dock for an extended period of time that made sense, but not refitted. Nipper was most experienced gunner on these when he left, possibly one of the last to act...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
May be so, but then it was not designed as a dedicated CSG/TAPS escort! It was designed as a GLOBAL COMBAT SHIP, capable of (if not mainly) singleton deployments. One of unintended consequences the cut in T26 numbers “to save money” has left expensively outfitted ships, that in practice may be rest...

That's not going to be in the water anytime soon. So 3 months late and counting. PS looks like its Bob's day to work at Govan :) It looks like June/July at the earliest. According to this story, we should be amazed at the super fast progress: https://ukdefencejournal.org.uk/new-frigate-takes-shape-...

You got an answer. I'm sure there's more to it. After all, the world experts on the guns mostly live in Germany.

Nice video, with a zoom all across the ship https://youtu.be/gWkuDjpvx1A?si=R8pv7g1vCo6FlLBr Didn't realise Diamond hadn't had the updated pole mast or it looks like Samson update either as she's missing the slot around the mast below Samson. The updated pole mast is for Shaman which is slowly bein...

Never heard of the "parliamentary assessment committee" before. And I'm pretty sure parliament approval is not part of the MoD acquisition process.jonas wrote: ↑22 Feb 2024, 08:26 Some progress ?

Re: 105mm L118 Light gun
A bit of reversal of fortune as back in the day it was the thing to replace the RN 4.5 with the 155mm from AS90 as that was where all the exciting developments were meant to happen. TMF was a massive missed opportunity. It would have enabled us to really standardise across the Armed Forces. Now we'...

Re: 105mm L118 Light gun
Seems an odd calibre to choose why not 120mm like the guns fitted to most NATO tanks? Why use a 'Navy' size? The rational is greater range and payload, but also that as the main naval gun of the US and Allies that there will be lots of ammo developments, especially in terms of guided rounds. But......

Re: Directed Energy Weapons
I believe Phalanx has a 300 degree arc of fire so, superstructure allowing, 2 fore and aft would provide 360 degree coverage. Lets go with 300 then. But what is the difference between two fore and aft and two on sponsons on either beam of the ship ? Same reason as why the main gun is placed on the ...
