Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The Mk57 is non-standard and would require new parts, maintenance and training, take up more deck space and internal volume. The Mk57 is unique to the Zumwalt class due to the tumblehome hull shape [requiring massive internal buoyancy tanks, as instead of with a normal flare hull, you lose transver...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

To this I would modify the T-45s already in service with sixteen "Tactical" versions of the Mk 57, allowing the vessels to carry a combination of LRASM, Sea Ceptor and even ASROC. I have stipulated the LRASM over say the Harpoon block II as the additional VLS would greatly reduce the deck...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

No great surprise but type 26 has failed to be shortlisted for the USN FGG(X) programme. We all knew that USN was unlikely to not buy American https://news.usni.org/2018/02/16/navy-picks-five-contenders-next-generation-frigate-ffgxprogram I should point out that the announcement relates to the Conc...

And just for comparison, the French Government recently reconfirmed and planned the entry into service of its 5 vastly superior FTI frigate designs, along with expanding the FREDA frigates to possess ABM missiles in the Aster-30BN1 variant. Type 31 continues to look like the biggest joke in the mod...

What I am surgesting is that the Arriwhead 120 design is put forward for the ffgx program with descustions between the uk and us to have a few built here in an attempt to boost theT31 program. It could be put forward as " you want us to be a strong naval partner, help us here with few built in...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

The FREMM proposal has now been formally rejected by the Canadian government due to the direct submission route being outside the competition rules. Many defence observers expect this to be a walk in the park for the BAE/LM T26 proposal. http://nationalpost.com/news/canada/liberals-reject-warship-pr...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

Looks like T26 is the front runner for Canada's CSC competition now. FREMM is looking like its out. They missed the 30/11 deadline. http://www.cbc.ca/news/politics/frigate-french-designer-1.4432705 Seems completely bonkers. They submitted their design directly to the Canadian government as they did...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

You might want to look up, for the current 6 T45s and 8 ASW T23s, on average how many are either deployed or immediately available for deployment at anyone time. In the future, with one carrier group deployed with 2 T45s and 2 T26, the second carrier group at 20-30 days notice to deploy (with 2 T45...

Can't we change the next 5 to match the RAN design with CEA radar and 48 mk41 VLS ( quad pack CAMM in 12 ) leaving 32 for aint sub missiles and land strike, then over time upgrade the first 3 to match. Put aster on the T31s The RAN design has 32 MK41 VLS and there would be approx 8 of these dedicat...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Providing escorts for the two carriers is likely to take up the available sea time for all 6 of the T45s and 6 of the 8 T26. The other two T26 will be busy protecting the CASD SSBNs. T45 and T26 are much more capable individually than previous generation ships and utilising most of the surface flee...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

CODLOG is not "unique", it has been around longer than CODLAG has; anti-vibration and noise attenuation are not a Type 26 exclusive in any way; and CODLAG does not necessarily imply the gas turbine is always in use, nor makes it a bad submarine hunter. Type 23 is a CODLAG ship too, you kn...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

CODLAG. You have to add the diesel sets. It doesn't sprint on the LM alone. I think you'll find that it's the CODLAG nature of FREMM which counts against it from an AWS perspective. Gas turbines are very noisy and you need to be as quiet as possible when hunting submarines. T26 has a unique CODLOG ...

The comment at the end of the article comparing the safest option to the most capable one, made me think of the selection of the Barracuda short fin for the submarine program , hardly the safest option I don't think the selection of T26 would be as risky as the Barracuda sub though as the diesel ve...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

i suspect if fremm was what the Navy wanted then T26 would be an awful lot like it. Exactly. Type 26 has unique AWS innovations which seem far advanced of anything else and a configurable multi mission bay. FREMM is a bit too generic but can adapt to fulfil multiple purposes. I can't honestly under...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

There is a very slim chance that the type 26 would ever be selected. The ridiculous costs alone already make it far too expensive for their requirements. Well there's zero chance of Type 26 being selected now - even if there was previously a small one. In relation to your costings, I expect the 3.7...

The French copying?? Color me shocked. P.S. what's this nonsense about Bae "heavily promoting the T26 for the US frigate requirement"? BAE Systems had put forward the Type 26 for the US FFG(X) programme and there had been at least a couple of meetings with UK government/BAE on this. https...
