Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
If the £250m unit cost cap remains firm, I think the best we can hope for is an Iver Huitfeldt/Absalon hybrid with virtually no weapons :D I'm not so sure , I'm a big fan of Arrowhead 140 if indeed it is still in the game, , less so Arrowhead 120 which is a bit too complex to my mind. However I'm p...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I'm aware of that and that's why I posted it here. There's more to Williamson's speech and future amphibious capability than just the LSS, welcome as it is. It returns amphibious capability to the center of Defence thinking whereas only a year ago with the reported loss of Albion and Bulwark and the...

This is the relevant bit from Williamson's speech; "Take the Royal Navy. They are exerting British influence through greater forward presence. I want to capitalise on that. Investing now to develop a new Littoral Strike Ship concept. And, if successful, we will look to dramatically accelerate t...

and that their offering will be based on the MEKO A-200 Its a pity Babcock won't confirm that their design is still based on the Arrowhead 140, not the Arrowhead 120. Lots of speculation, but have Babcock actually confirmed it since the T31 programme was restarted? Thales, Babcock's partner, has. W...

Soldier magazine notes that the 60mm mortar can be operated from inside the turret. Cool, but i'm guessing that's while it is loaded, then someone has to reload from outside for obvious reasons. Wonder how difficult it would be to retrofit the mortar that the israeli Merkava uses, which is breech l...

Re: Border Force Cutters.
I agree about tasking some of the p2000s. They are robust little vessels, are actually quite fast and can easily handle the Channel even at its roughest, in such conditions one would hope in any case any sane migrant would be unlikely to attempt to cross. Also their radar for this type of work is ac...

We are not going to be going over the beach where the environment is not totally benign, except in small raids Would you class the 2003 Iraq in invasion as a small raid? I'd say is was a large combined force manoeuvre, and is indicative of future operations. Obviously we'll try and avoid planning f...

Compact VDS/TASS examples: As the ship noise is not strong above ~1 kHz, while those VDS/TASS in active mode is using ~2 kHz (CAPTAS-1) or 22-29 kHz (ST2400), maybe "River B2 noisy" issue will not be a big problem. Thales CAPTAS-1 (<2 kHz) With Blue Watcher (hull-mounted FLASH), it is spe...

Must admit I was pretty incredulous when I heard that Atlas Elektronik were the unknown contender, and initially pretty cynical too - the idea of the RN sailing the oceans in a German boat just doesn't seem right at all :-) Since then however I've been reading up on the latest Meko's and specificall...

More pictures from Tim Fish in Chile. Can't spot any differences from previous pics of previous exhibitions. Have to admit if it came as depicted I could just about live with BAE's offering as the Type 31, although clearly ours would come with a Mk 8 gun. With most of the weapons and equipment port...

Izumo at 248m long is 32m shorter than QE and will need a ramp. It will, there was a cgi mockup of it somewhere. Aren't we already getting a Manchester? For me one of them has got to be Exeter after the 8" gun Cruiser of WW2. Performed brilliantly at the Battle of the River Plate in 1939 where her 8" guns proved crucial then very sadly lost in 1942 at the Battle of the Java Sea. Most of the crew got ...
