Re: RN anti-ship missiles
I guess if the need arises then a UOR would occur, Harpoon BlockIII would be the logical choice due to the missile interface being there already.

Rafale nearly bankrupted both Snecma and Dassault. Both needed large bail-outs from the French government which wouldn't be allowed under EU rules now.

I think UAS for sonobuoy pickets is a good idea, with the aim to drop fences of the low cost long life Ultra passive DIFAR buoys. They could police these for hours and if needed drop a multistatic triad on a suspect contact. The problem is that dropping weapons may be a step too far or the performan...

Perhaps a tethered drone would be a good short term fix. The recce screen is already using them and they have much wider field of view.

Fire (as in the flamey stuff) does tend to be a consequence of an ATGM hit unless you have serious armour protection. Modern tandem or binary ATGM HEAT warheads generate a lot of lateral plasma flow when in contact with the triggering surface. This improves the chance of beating ERA. I think if it k...

Re: Martlet/Lightweight multirole missile
No, it is a failsafe. It has to be enabled before firing. The mechanism is armed after launch. Otherwise anybody could trigger self destruct if they knew coding (unless wireguided). Those weapons with a command destruct have quite complex interactive software to prevent this, but still need enabling...

Re: Martlet/Lightweight multirole missile
Most weapons which have a self destruct enabler in the start sequence. Dependant on guidance (wire vs radio vs SAL/MMW) the range gate is preset or elective. On start up the self destruct powers up from the main power bus and then awaits launch detection (usually an accelerometer with a minimum limi...

I can think of quite a few people who had armour and indirect fire superior to our unit, who are now contributing to the long term soil fertility of their homeland. So, I respectfully disagree with your latter.

I don't understand how an army built around Boxer and an armored truck will be capable of peer warfare. Sounds more like a unit for fighting colonial wars against under equipped 3rd worlds. In which, by the way, the UK is 0 and 2 over the past 20 years. Peer warfare is armored warfare. Why does arm...

I haven't fired Starstreak but we were part of the trial team which looked at it as a direct fire weapon against IFV'S. Was amazing to watch. The reaction time was especially impressive. The time to fire was less than the MILAN (I would be wary about actually specifying due to opsec) and we simulate...

Aplique armour has some defects: Shearing strain means an non lethal hit can mal-align panels, needing an angle grinder anyway! This means you have to replace the whole lot. Aplique really doesn't like ERA. The shock wave will cause delamination. This has been seen in several conflicts and one of th...
