Re: Brexit - The UK's EU Referendum & Withdrawal

Funny how the minority have the amazing power to read the minds of the majority, apparently. Must come with the Euro chip that was implanted at birth.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Why the need to conduct these trials off the U.S. Coast? Is this because we don't have enough F35 in the UK? or they 'can't' be spared? Or inter service stuff? With QE going over there soon, are the next 5 F35 being shipped back aboard her or being flown back at huge expense?

I wonder if that's a CIWS Piano? Glad to see we have our priorities sorted. At least lack of PoW news is being made up by this exciting news!

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

More Defence political spin. Politics trying to let us down gently, and to make it look really convincing, let's spend a few Million in the process, but as long as we get away with the Decision to reduce T26 Hulls and therefore escort numbers, Result! Disgraceful, but we should have expected it. Tal...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

So is she now getting 4 Phalanx? There was never mention before of Phalanx in that position. The plan was for three, two on the stern and one ahead of the Port forward sponson?

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

If there was a reason to scramble QE this is it. Fires in Greece, a need for Helicopters there, she should go now! Best possible PR and she could really make a difference. One of the reasons she exists.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

While it's quiet, here's one to ponder, or ridicule. The C130 that took off and landed from an American Aircraft Carrier had a stall speed of about 100knts, maybe 90 in that test condition. It was able to take off and land, with a fair margin of safety, albeit her wingspan required no other aircraft...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Great film if you fast forward past all the acting bits.
Does the Airwing depicted, represent the most Type numerous of any carrier Airwing in history? Maybe Forestals Airwing in Vietnam 'Trumps' it.
And yes slightly off topic but relevant to the Two types QE will mainly embark?

Looking at how long it has taken on average from first dive to sea trials, Audacious may sail October time, 10 months, there or thereabouts.

Re: Ocean Class Helicopter Carrier (LPH) (1998-2018) (ex RN)

Manning issues aside, what a ridiculous decision. A carrier for £55M. A bit like Leicester signing Jonny Evans for £3.5M! As part of further Education options, bring back a none Combatant version of National service (to stop the conciencious objections) as an alternative to further education or a jo...

Since when did RN ships fly the White Ensign off the back of the forward super structure, rather than off the stern? Very American.

Re: HMS Victory (1778-Present) (RN)

I did, we spent all day Tuesday at the Historic dockyard, and I even went to see HMS Alliance! Spectacular! I saw the cafe on Warrior, and did my best to ignore it although you can't avoid it, but the gift shop on Victory really made my blood boil! I even found HMS Hood's bell, although not sure why...

While I was brave enough to venture South, having had my injections! I visited Victory, and she is truly Magnificent. Last time I saw her was 2010, And since then almost the whole ship inc the hold is superbly presented, and relatively accessible. My only gripe. How do you take some of the shine of ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Personally relieved to still see her there. Visited Portsmouth Tuesday and yesterday to see her for the first time. She is pointing out towards sea still, and no sign of Phalanx. Her engines were running, presumably due to her being port side on? A couple of T45 were in the inner Basin, we were told...

It makes the whole B2 procurement look even more ridiculous. We could have had 8 Avengers if B2 had not happened, giving us a useful 22 escort fleet.

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

Are the Albions fit for purpose?
Are they relevant?
Do we consider them of high value?
Are others envious of them?
Are they well balanced?

Then rather than plan for a New design replacement who's cost is likely to turn into Bazillions, just build a couple more of them when the time is right?
