Re: United States
Looks like the Royal Marines are enjoying themselves again.... I hate journalistic puff pieces like this. They always invariably don't stand up to close scrutiny and will be resented by the allies in question because the details of this exercise will almost have certainly been leaked by someone in ...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
The way I see it is that Australia will go with a new common RN/RAN boat design between the UK & AUS, based on the new SSN(R) for the RN. Australia can get in on the ground floor and influence the design spec to what it needs. This will also lead to economies of scale, a single class build of (a...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
it’s funny you actually think the US is going to give up a $20+B deal and just give it to the U.K., lol… and even if they were, for some magical reason, where is the capacity in the UK to build it concurrently with Dreadnought? I guess time will tell which one of us is right… P.S.- The Aussies appr...

With no US carrier group currently deployed in the Western Pacific, You can bet the military brass at the Pentagon and our Australian friends have no wish whatsoever for the Brits to go stirring up a hornets nest with China at the current time.

It doesn't really matter one little bit what the current defence secretary says about projected numbers of airframes, only how much money the treasury say is available, to his immediate successors over the next 10-15yrs.dmereifield wrote: We can but hope that actions and words are aligned, for a change

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
What it highlights is what everyone already knows, 6 T45s was never enough, even without the propulsion problems they have. For the RN, It was a simple choice between a full order of 12, (then reduced to 8) or only getting a single Aircraft Carrier. In the short term, 6 T-45's is a problem, no doub...

Re: Type 45 Destroyer (Daring Class) (RN) [News Only]
I think this upgrade pretty much guarantees the T45's will get at least one life extension to their (long fictional) out of service dates.. With this and the propulsion upgrades, they'd be spending the best part of £1bn for the 6 ships to only have another 8-10yrs service life out of them, before bo...

When you have China putting AAW platforms in the water with 100+ VLS, It's not hard to see who & what will be what influences the design of the new class.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
I still sometimes think that, assuming the same level of funding was put in to them, we'd have been better off spending the same amount on 4 or 5 x 35,000t class carriers, similar to the Italian one, than 2x65,000t (or whatever they now displace) QE flat tops. Having 3 of those at sea at all times, ...

Having the Americans on board the carrier and escorting it serves two purposes, filling the gaps until 2023-24 and more importantly it will put a restraint on China's belligerent behaviour when we enter the South China Sea. If this was just a purely British effort, the level of intimidation and thre...

I tend to think that one of the most significant ways that intranational animosities have been kept alive over the years is through having separate national sports teams and leagues. I don't think that there'd be much support for Scottish secession in Glasgow if Celtic and Rangers were in the UK Pr...
