Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

A small asw frigate might be the best bet and preferential to either extended Khareef or Venator 110 ( unless SSKs are added to the mix), if some Absalons can be added into the numbers (littoral comabt role), then problem solved! However We have to be building something, and we are not, no major war...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

The batch 1s should be kept, and extra man power allowed, since the UK needs additional patrol vessels for the channel.

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

It depends on the UK shipbuilding strategy, and how strategic it is. Why not 8 T26s built at the old Yarrow yard 8 streached Khareefs at Govans T31 8 Venator 110 at Cammil Laird T83 3 Mars SSS built between H&W A&P and assembled in Rosyth aka aircraft carrier alliance. 3 Samuel beckett built...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

On names, can't resist joining in with some thoughts. 1) It was a smart move calling them Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales: Psychologically harder for politicians to cancel? 2) Prince of Wales is a good name because the battleship was sunk due to lack of sea based air cover, a reminder of the pri...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

I had heard a rumour that a key driver for T31 besides costs is to have non Scotish yards doing the build. Hence an export capable design to be built by Babcocks at Appledore and Camel Laird. The later fitting into the northern powerhouse strategy.

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

People talk about Venator being just a powerpoint, but basically all the T26 is at present is a model, no real frigate save been built in the Uk since HMS St Albans.

I like to visualise my ideas and play with Photoshop, so I thought I'd share this evenings playing. Why not focus on an asw frigate: space for but not fitted with VLS, Hanger and flight deck capable for merlin, 2 RAM systems in Phalank mounts, Gun, ? Diesel engined. TAS fitted

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

Some responses 1) SSKs are not just coastal, the Japanese have ocean going SSKs which are capable of realativelycoastal operations. I think a good quality SSK would be a better ASW asset around UK waters and the \North Atlantic than a FLF which didn't have a quality ASW provison. (ie quiet, good son...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I would rather go for 10 Type 26s, + 8 SSKs, and 4 Holland class, indtead of 8 Type 26s, and 8 Type 31s

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

So why not 10 T26s, 8 SSKs, and 4 Hollands? Certainly more useful than a bunch of glorified khareef type OPV's. If the T31 has no specialist capabilities the resources would indeed be better off spent on more T26's and SSK's. However there commitments made by the government make that solution unfea...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

The Type 31 has got to be able to perform as an ASW, AAW, ASS asset other wise it is pointless. It also has to help ressurect shipbuilding outside of Scotland. If a stretched Khareef or a Vneator 110 cant do that, then either its a smaller version of the T26 (single screwed, schepaer TAS, wildcat ha...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

This seems suprising, since T23s are quite silent, what's the issue? This is the problem with having just one shipbuilder and a government that doesn't understand long term planning.

Re: Australian Defence Force

SSKs are a force to be reckoned with, hard to detect, and far cheaper than an SSN, but lethal. I still think the RN should have a small force of SSKs.

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

The T26 plan never involved getting more ASW platforms. The 8 that were planned will be built. All the additional ships were always planned to be GP hulls. Doing something incredibly stupid does not mean having to continue doing it. I know very well what the premises were, and i've always considere...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

It seems to me that despite the poll in "Type 31 General Purpose Frigate" in which most people seem to think that the likely result will be "A number(more than 5) of heavy OPVs spun as "frigates", the primary message on this thread is ...."We don't want OPVs" If y...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate

The trouble is we are where we are: In an ideal world with adequate investment in the royal Navy, 16 T26s would be ideal. But there is no political will for that, so it's 8 T26s plus, optimistically 8 T31s.I don't know the money availbale for the T31 programme, but the fundemenatl aim must be to get...

type 14 had 2x limbo mortars and bofors 40mm so were much reduced firgates. the size of hanger and hull are straightforward steel is cheap Yes , know them well spent a short amount of time on one, however the concept wasn't a bad one, they were too lightly armed, however a scaled down T26 in size i...

On the type 31 frigate, do read http://www.theguardian.com/uk-news/2016/apr/22/clyde-shipworkers-glasgow-fear-for-jobs-mod-contracts-delays I think there are just two options for T31, that would make sense within a shipbuilding strategy. 1) T31 is to T26 as T14 was to T12. A smaller version, which h...

From the Janes article it appears BAE are putting forward an improved Khareef and VMT Venator design are 2 early contenders for Type 31.,
