Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Re T83. (as speculation not news so on this thread). Why does it require ASW abilities etc. These will drive up cost and size for little use or benefit (inc extra crew which are in short supply). The T26 is optimised for ASW and as can be seen from our US friends (Arleigh Burke's) the ASW bit doesn'...

Re: Type 83 Destroyer (RN) [News Only]
Question: why does a ship designed and almost entirely used to escort a carrier have to be GP (8x series) to dedicated AAW (4x series)?

AndyC I think you are being over optimistic. Most of any extra cash will go on black hole / overspend. We are unlikely to see any expansion. Of course this is just a person view. Hope I'm wrong.

Off topic, but the whole concept seems silly to me. Small, slow, underarmed vessels in a war zone in China's back yard. They will survive a few days on their on if they are lucky.

Agree with you Shark, but I do sometimes wonder how long these "non fighting" assest would last in a hot war with someone like China.

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
Again, The LCS isn't replacing a capable escort fleet, so it doesn't have to be one. The T31 is replacing 25% of the UK's primary fighting big escort fleet, and is incapable of doing that role. Isn't the LCS replacing the Oliver Perry frigates (ASW) and MCM fleets? Both of which it has spectacularl...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
"Indeed. And the UK seizing an Iranian tanker wasn’t very bright."
or was it?
It showed what RM's can do.
It proved why we have a frigate in the gulf
It may prove we need more frigates
