Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (Future Maritime Reconnaissance Aircraft) (RAF)

Maybe getting ahead of myself here but where do we now care to think the RAF/UK stands on possible AAS acquisition? A likely logical move? Done deal? Or when flying pigs land on the frozen plains of hell? AAS Dream on son. Ain't fer sale. Perhaps not as yet but we are always first in line for expor...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I think you're potentially reading a bit too literally there. Because the way it's worded could equally mean a modified T26 design not necessarily a brand new from the keel up design. Lot's of confusion really from all this. There seems to be a lot of ' analysts ' running around saying that despite...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I didn't read or wiki this stuff. I watched and listened to Cameron live in the Commons. It was 6x T45, 8x T26, 5x Light Frigates. Total = 19. Nothing i have encountered has yet confirmed that so unless he specifically, unequivocally stated that exact set of numbers with resounding finality (?) we ...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

You're wrong. 8 T26's + 5 Light Frigates = 13. 13 Frigates + 6 T45 Destroyers = 19 Frigates & Destroyers. Future fleet: 6x T45 8x T26 5x Light Frigate Total: 19 No one can say who is right or wrong for sure at the moment. There is too much conflicting info floating around and not enough specifi...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

Sounds like a clear commitment to keep 19 frigate/destroyer fleet PLUS these lighter ships, NOT instead of, so sounds like the plan is to keep the last 5 T23 in service, with these being replaced by the T26 follow on??. Yes. Not to test your patience with repeat questions Gabby, but to make things ...

No worries. On the face of things a bloody good development, as ever however the way it's termed has caused me jitters...'life of the programme', don't like that one bit.

Re: Ajax (ex 'Scout') Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

Right you are, Arfah. Ta for the clarification. Also Gabby, no specifics on the future of Challenger. Certainly seems any hopes for a replacement are well and truly dead but in saying that the MIV was not mentioned either. Maybe the SDSR is not the right place for such detail??? MIV is mentioned as...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion

Just saw on TD's Twitter feed that the a ground based BMD capability is mentioned in there somwhere??? Just mentions ground-based BMD radar to extend NATO's BMD net. It's in section 4 .16 Not a bad thing. Would be nice to think we might look at some sort of beefier AD capability but i am aware it i...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion

Also, the SDSR does indeed mention 138 Lightnings - reconfirming our original commitment after much debate. It does? 136 F-35s was one of the first things I searched for when the document was released, but I couldn't find anything. You don't happen to know the page number or the general whereabouts...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion

What is clear is that there seems to be a desire, whatever happens, to increase the escort fleet beyond 19 vessels in the near future. How much of a benefit this will be to the Navy in real terms however will be decided by just what this new Light Frigate can offer by way of capability. If it is des...

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion

If it were ten T26 and six light frigates I'd be quite happy, but maintaining the same number with a lower capability component isn't good news. Indeed it is not good news. I hate that term. Light frigates are a waste, good for nothing other than boosting the wikepidia page. Trying to peice the new...

Re: Ajax (ex 'Scout') Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

Have been wondering myself as to where these new strike brigades are expected to appear from. The army already has its brigade commitments spread thin what with the new NATO rapid reaction initiatives in their various forms (including the one we lead no less) and Army 2020's existing ORBAT changes. ...

So far it has all been media hand-me-downs it seems. E...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

The BBC seems to have the figure of '138' mentioned in the most reasonable context at present - no announcement or confirmation of 138 as yet but an expectation that such a figure will be presented in the SDSR: In Monday's defence review, David Cameron is also expected to commit the UK to purchasing...

Sounds to me like we need clarification from the week to come. From where i am sitting at the moment i am reading the present, but incomplete, picture like this: - IOC for 24 an initial aircraft to be sped up (the BBC article seems to allude to this suggesting only 8 would have been bought in the sa...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

Just came across this myself thanks to the BBC paper reviews. I'm praying to god it is true and accurate but i have a nasty feeling that it is simply the press getting its wires crossed in old information again and drawing assumptions from that.

Re: SDSR 2015 / "Defence Cuts" General News & Discussion

If true, one would at least think they would need to recieve some of the electronic and software updates (to Praetorian, CAPTOR etc etc) brought about through the various enhancement upgrades in order to allow them to renew the role, right? Might even get a bit more utility out of them still and all...

Re: SDSR wish list

Fuck off. The army got off lightly last time because of Herrick. The RN and RAF lost much much more capability than land. Sure but whilst the army didn't lost as much capability with regards to kit it still lost nigh on 20,000 personnel and had to wait longer for new programmes to work their way al...

Re: SDSR wish list

Seems the Army is not getting anywhere near enough love in here. Personally I think the army should be fine. For me army 2020 is mostly a sound concept. I think they would benifit from some stability and funds to help fill the gaps in army 2020 and I am optimistic they may accheive some of that. I ...

Re: SDSR wish list

Seems the Army is not getting anywhere near enough love in here. It took some of the biggest hits of the last SDSR and has, relatively speaking, been playing second fiddle to the other two services so far as major procurement programmes over the past decade or so. Their manpower concerns are equally...
