Is there then an issue of hull noise effecting the added towed sonar to all of the Arleigh Burkes , and if the A.Bs are effective with the towed sonar despite not being purpose bult for only asw should the R.N then consider the addition of an asw suite for all frontline ships Arleigh Burkes aren't ...

Contracts just been placed for the MDI-DSL 30mm cannons for QEC, combined order for 12 mounts, but this also includes mounts for the Tide class. no they won't because that then adds to the pressure to pay for them to be built by keeping the concept floating round for years its less politically embarassing when the news gets out the project has been quietly dropped I hope you are wrong a fleet of just 6 x T45 and 8 T26 would be completely in...

Do we know where she is getting fitted with the UK specific kit comms etc? I guess Falmouth is probable. Wonder if she will get Phalanx straight away. Have we got enough mounts? Or will the Tides only receive them on gulf deployments?

Minor news - I just received a reply to a tweet from Alnmaritec Blyth who are building some of the boats for HMS Queen Elizabeth. I asked them what they were - A new bespoke design, 4 in number Davit launched Personnel Transfer Boats. Twin engine and twin water jet monohulls.

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

Unless all the machinery is acoustically mounted, and the propulsion diesels are in acoustic enclosures it would be a waste of time fitting CAPTAS to a River OPV, particularly in it's passive surveillance mode. The noise from the diesels would render the CAPTAS next to useless.

I think this talk of a new naval base in the Caribbean really is non starter. The funds, political will, real estate, and most importantly the need really aren't there. We have perfectly good reciprocal arrangements with the US, French and Dutch in the area that can provide whatever support we requi...

Re: river I/I.5 and II patrol vessels

And once again the size of the fleet is reduced... I can see how a corvette / short legged light frigate could be very much of use when either operated within the UK EEZ, North Sea, North Atlantic, Baltic and Med (using existing UK / BOT bases). They could take over the FRES and TAP roles as well a...

On that note, when is HMS Prince of Wales naming ceremony? I guess HMS Queen Elizabeth will have had to have moved south to Portsmouth by then. They will need the fitting out berth for POW. I suppose that also frees up the dry dock in case Queen Elizabeth needs to go back in for any snagging, remedi...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I'd be amazed if this happens. As has been said above the RN has learnt some painful lessons in the past by not having a modern CIWS. If they are fitting 2 Phalanx mounts each on the T26 and MARS and our previous carriers had 3 CIWS mounts QEC has gotta have something. Maybe Sea-Ceptor!

Off topic now, I see the T45's need fixing, I guess that's what happens when you scrimp and save. I hope we don't get a repeat with the QEC. Bad enough having an electrical failure on a T45, I couldn't imagine the potential consequences on the Queen Elizabeth. How similar are their propulsion systems?
