There's also been some additional commentary on YouTube (up for a few days now) here:
And also a follow-up video with the new crash footage:

Re: Airbus Zephyr - HAPS
But that's always been the case with satellite photography. The Zephyr doesn't intend to solve that, but does make it a more versatile capability. To be clear, I'm not knocking it at all, just trying to understand the limitations. But a satellite can accept much heavier sensors and so perhaps with ...

Re: Airbus Zephyr - HAPS
This all looks impressive. But unless I'm missing something, it does seem very dependent on clear skies for most (all?) of its imagery. So, fine for the Arizona desert, but less so for eg wintertime NW Atlantic conditions.

Focus is on the USAF but comments on the UK too. Not too sure how they would fix the problem though.

Re: Afghanistan - 2021 Taliban offensive
I do think you're all rather missing the point here. The strategic mistake was ever to think that neocon nation-building was a viable proposition for such a tribal Islamic 'state'. The whole history of the region tells of the impossibility of this task. Plus it's, relatively speaking, the backyard o...

Any armour on T26?
An idle curiosity question: do modern RN ships have any significant armour or has it been designed out as a waste of time/money/weight etc against modern weapons? Reason for asking is that I've been watching some of the many new videos on YT about the US New Jersey battleship (that is now effectivel...

Re: Spaceflight & Cosmology
Debatable. The Kármán line is only one definition of space (and not a very precise one at that). The US military definition of space is 50 miles/80km altitude so VG did achieve space flight, in US eyes at least.SKB wrote:Not space. Didn't get to 100km (Karman line).

Re: English Electric Canberra (1951-2006) (RAF)
Obviously not RAF use, but the US-built WB-57 Canberra is still in active use by NASA. Last time I saw mention of it was monitoring one of the earlier Spacex Starship test flights (SN11 maybe?). (Talking of which, I wonder if they really are going to try to refly SN15?. Strong winds yesterday seemed...

Re: Integrated Review (previously SDSR 2020)
Anyone care to comment on today's Times preview of what to expect from the IR part 2? An amateur reading of the broad generalities presented suggests nothing too surprising but it would be good to see a more informed critique.

Latest update video released today from Tokamak Energy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KzbSrAzVG8Q I think this is a really exciting, world-leading, UK-based (near Oxford) future energy project that is poised to make its next leap forwards, hopefully later this year. Many other previous short video...

- are you both saying that the 22 bn pounds were pretty much wasted? I'm not saying it was wasted exactly but if that sort of estimate is right then it does seem to have been an extraordinary amount of money for what's been achieved. And it may now be “possible to do all the research, development, preclinical testing, and Phase I trials for new viral pandemics before those new viruses had even emerged — to have those vaccines sitting on the shelf and ready to go when they did. Re: Coronavirus
I see Pfizer are submitting an EUA (Emergency Use Authorisation) to the US FDA today . This is the last step in the chain before mass vaccination can start, subject of course to the FDA approving the EUA, which will probably take days to 2-3 weeks for a decision. This is for the US. There is no soli...

And the mln $ question: treats symptoms only or also effectively suppresses spreading? That's a tricky question for a trial to answer - suspect it will be 6-12 months before we know that. But personally I don't see that as a big deal. If there's enough vaccine supply then anyone (in an eligible gro...

Re: Coronavirus
School vaccination teams could theoretically help but they have a massive backlog to catch up on because schools were shut for such a long period. Schools are unlikely to figure at all on 2 counts: First, serious COVID infection in school age children is very rare so it's not a priority from that p...
