Re: Russian Armed Forces
The admiral would turn in his grave... if he only knew. Talking about admirals, Nakhimov http://www.navyrecognition.com/images/stories/news/2018/february/Russia_Admiral_Nakhimov_Cruise_CGN_Upgrade_2.jpg is only due back in service in 2021. If all goes to plan... which does not happen that often. Ho...

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?
Before these drip-feed amounts, added to the defence budget in the course of this year, we were level with https://www.statista.com/statistics/298490/defense-spending-united-kingdom-uk/ 2011/12, which means that in the intervening years there was a cumulative shortfall of £ 10.4 bn... quite a lot o...

Because they are against of it, so they are trying to make it look that if there's no UK deterrent- everything would be OK?ArmChairCivvy wrote:OK, cyber and ASW.
Why do the newspapers keep adding in deterrent, which
- has its own budget
- and a plentiful contingency?

On the other hand, if this will become a permanent increase, why not ise it for pay rise for RN sailors that would be on escort ships, to try to alleviate manpower shortage?

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]
About guns, anybody knows the prices for 57 mm and 76 mm gun? Last time I saw a direct quote as to cost, they were around $5m each, but that was several years ago. I think the significant cost difference was that the 57mm needed an RTB service more frequently than the 76mm (every 4 and 7 years, fro...

Re: Boeing Chinook (RAF)
While the capabilities these helicopters will provide is welcome, is it worth the price we are paying? At £2.7 billion for 16 or around £168 million each, even with add-ons, can it be justified? In my opinion only if they are modified for operating at sea with folding rotors etcetera can they be co...

As discussed elsewhere the MoD cannot take jobs or financial benefits to the UK into account when letting contracts, unless there is a directive from the Cabinet changing policy. Well, in that case, why not buy everything from States? Should be cheaper... Not to mention all that great interoperabil...

The plan for the T31 is to get them in the water, and upgrade them later if necessary. That's not what Sir John Parker wrote or what was said when the Type 31 program was kicked off. In fact he said the opposite, no expensive mid life refits but sell on the ships and build new ones. Been said befor...

Even taking off from a ship and having to climb a mountainous region over the coast it struggles in some ...

But who want's to be a sailor in an ever shrinking navy? Where you have to fear that your ship will be axed every year or two because of "Defence Modernisation"?
Also, who would like 10 months long deployments?
