Re: The war in Ukraine
He will anyway! Putin’s rationale for invading was because he felt that Russia was threatened with aggression by “NATO”. Well, after the showing of the Russian Army during his “Special Operation”, he must now be not just having sleepless nights, but Nightmares as he has demonstrated to the world bot...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
You may well be correct, I hope so. However,, some of that “headroom” MUST have been used up by the 40mm mounting located above the hangar. Another contributor to the use of that “headroom“ is likely to be the CAMM silo (depending on its size naturally).

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
tomuk Thank-you for the photograph. It is not as bad as I had envisaged, but it is still far from ideal. Subject to Top Weight considerations, one solution might be a position for one phalanx behind (forward of) and slightly above the aft 40mm, with the other , but probably the best locations for th...

With type 31 I would keep the 2 x 40mm and if you wanted Phalanx or SeaRam add one each side of the rear 40mm

Not really a practical proposition, due to the interference with each other’s firing arcs.

If you had considered what you have just written, you would have realised that it would have to have been the other way round. Or do you think that it is smart to make the “ Manned Vessel” the target?

So what do you think the difference is then, between the RN’s Phalanx Guns and the USN’s Sea Whizz (Phalanx) Guns ? :mrgreen

Additional crew availability is (one of) the prerequisites for expanding the RN, in addition to adequate fuel, ordnance and spares stocks, referred to elsewhere.

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
You yourself have just agreed with my point! The “Shed” would not need to be so high , if the ships being built were either at or around (water level) rather than having to be some 10 Metres higher, The further consideration is, that it is necessary to build it bigger than is needed for T26, unless ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Principle still applies, I was just illustrating ONE possibility! Required Bridge Deck-head height COULD cause a problem in a similar way. Also, any and indeed all work CAN be carried out outside. However, if you think that this would be desirable, then there would be no incentive to construct a cov...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
You might need the extra headroom permitted by building in a dry dock to clear the upper works of the T83, to allow a really high mainmast for mounting it’s Radar ? Unless this has been adequately allowed for, it may not prove possible to “raise the roof” later on.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)
Unless it is the OCU and THREE Squadrons? 56 / 4 = 14 in each Squadron (OCU regarded as an operational Squadron). I would however, regard that as a major mistake unless it was as a (very) last resort. If we do need FOUR Frontline Squadrons, which IMHO we do; they should be in addition to both the OC...

Ought to have been a 3 ship class anyway, but due to deteriorating world situation, I am giving serious consideration to the viewpoint that if we heed the warnings it now should really become a class of 4! (2 more REAL National Flagships).

Unfortunately there is not a “General” thread for RN Submarines, but the surplus crew may be unlikely to be available for either Astute Class SSNs or SSN(R), if as I suspect they may be required to facilitate the return of Vanguard.

From my point of view, I am more interested in 9 hulls and onwards. Hopefully then a window of opportunity to acquire T26 in sufficient numbers, so that they can indeed become the Global Combat Ships that they were always intended to become.

Reference “D” Lock comment, I have always thought that converting No. 2 Basin would have been a better solution and indeed was eventually given consideration. If it had actually been built, it would have also provided the.possibility of (hopefully) a 3rd (QEC) berth.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
If the number of escorts to be built is expanded due to an update on the Sino-Russian threat, to the point where Govan (plus Scotstoun) and Rosyth cannot meet demand, I would be delighted to see Shipbuilding resume in the covered facility at Portsmouth.
