Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I'm having a bit of deja vu here but you are confusing different techniques. Thales 4D radars aren't dual polarisation they just concentrate their scans on the target and extract doppler shift ie speed info. The only 'unconfirmed' dual polrisation radar id the LMDR radar recentlt built by LM in Ala...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

SAMPSON shall better see upgrade. I think a GaN version of SAMPSON (say, SAMPSON2) must be developed. Most of the "radar capability" of AESA radar resides within the soft-ware. Replacing the front-end semiconductor modules can be seen in many AESA worldwide. Why not the same to SAMPSON? I...

As you say okay if flying below ships radar horizon, but China now has the land based four engine KJ-500 AEW&C flying and deveoping the two engine copy of the Hawkeye the KJ-600, first flight Jan last year, for their new Type 003 CATOBAR carrier. Yeah, they're definitely moving forward in that ...

If firing JSM from F-35B at 300nm think very low chance of Pk Not if guidance is being provided by a 3rd party What 3rd party were you thinking of? if firing from say 100 nm the stealth capability of the F-35B will be seriously compromised by its externally wing mounted JSMs making it a target for ...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

They don't have to fire off at 300nm, just far enough away that the surface ship can't effectively fire back. If a naval SAM has a 100km range they probably won't shoot until they get within ~75km, any further than that and it's too easy for the bogey to do a 180 and fly out of range. If firing JSM...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

IAI say F-35 stealth would be seriously compromised by its external 425 gallon underwing tanks and pylons developed for range necessary to attack Iran directly. No-one is disputing that...hanging a large non-stealthy fuel tank under an F-35 is going to geneate a huge return. But a stealthy shape (l...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

But...external mounting isn't a big deal, the weapon itself is LO so even with a pylon its not going to increase RCS too much, but it also has a 300 mile range in a Hi-Hi-Lo profile so it need not be launched anywhere near to an enemies engagement range. I'm sure you won't mind if i totally disagre...

Re: RN anti-ship missiles

I'd prefer a small buy of JSM missiles to be launched from F-35B. That's a problem as they would have to be carried externally on the F-35B as weapon bay too short compared to the F-35A and C weapon bays where JSM can fit internally, so you lose the F-35B stealth capability, remember reading the Is...

Not unless the US does it first it isn't. Integrating PrSM into Mk41 will be £££ for which we'll see little to no return on our investment. Thales Australia integrating the LRSAM into Mk41 with a booster for the LRSAM. Its LM, not Thales Australia. The first launch was on 2014, 6 years ago. Austral...

I could be wrong, but I thought the SM-6 was seen as the replacement for the SM-2, being complimented by the latest version of ESSM. Most allied navies though are continuing to use the SM-2. The SM-2 MR restarted production after ~4 years in 2017 after international orders for 280 IIIA & Bs, in...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

No big objection, but I do not think having a long range AAW missile is "must" at least for CSG escort. Assume medium range AAW of benefit if T26 operating in the GIUK gap with limited air support or say 50 miles out from the noise created by the carrier, RFA fleet replenishment ships etc...

On the cost. I also do not think T26 is too expensive compared to US Constellation class. It is intentionally made costy by requiring slow building. This is why I push to invest "T32 money (if exist)" into "more T26", as it will significantly cheapen T26's cost. Keeping the &quo...

I think the point your missing there is that Artisan rotates so it shows it 1/4 sized smaller face to the all 4 1/4's surely making up for its smaller size. The size also allows it to be mounted far higher up allowing the radar horizon to be pushed further back, plus it uses less deck area and ener...

A few thoughts on my previous post saying T26 is NOT a Tier 1 frigate and the various reactions, undoubtedly the T26 is a Tier 1 ASW frigate, but to me there is more than just ASW to a frigate. How would you rate it against the new USN Constellation frigate coming in at what looks like substantially...

The T-23 is still a capable ASW platform and we also have some very skill crew on board these ships. 26th January Babcock have contracted KAEFER UK & Ireland to apply over 510,000m2 of specialist paint coatings, so 100,000 m2 per ship, surprising to me such a large number. PS KAEFER UK & Ireland is a subsidiary of a family owned German company. https://www.kaefer.com/KAEFER-in-UK-amp-Irelan...
