Sure. Could also probably afford a couple more by not burning a few £Billion on Brexit. But these are the times.SKB wrote:If BAE were still nationalised, then maybe we'd be getting 13. Or more.

if[1] so I'd definitely put that as being in the high end of an "upgraded Astute" range rather than a new design. If the pressure hull's diameter need to be increased and/or [2]new reactor is used you're pretty much in a "new design" space. I like both of the "ifs" - a...

Meanwhile, the North Koreans are rapidly improving their nuclear research facility. So his Foreign policy track record continues to be an unblemished trail of crap.

I was thinking more of moving forwards with Brimstone 2 and SPEAR. It would have been useful as there will probably be a ground launched version, something we need for a ATGW under armour capability gaps. Brim2 did not exist when JCM and later JAGM started, and the targets for both missiles at thei...

JAGM production (finally) green-lit for production. IOC for Increment I JAGM is slated for early 2019. After the Joint Common Missile was cancelled for cost reasons, JAGM was launched to reach JCM goals at lower cost. But it too faced the axe until it became one of the first major programs to embra...

European industrial concerns aside, it's going to be interesting/embarrasing if the UK and NATO both end up moving away from E-3 while we're still faffing about with incremental upgrades and hoping drones can take up the slack.

As for replacement; I'll just say the ability is there, the funding is not (yet). Odd that you are privy to USN aspirations. Don't try to discredit people passive-aggressively, it's unkind. As a final comment neither in the USN or RN is there any hint of any updating/replacing the ASROC designed in the 1950's and though would like RN to procure the updated Japanese ASROC for the T26 think highly unlikely. The current ASROC wasn't designed in the 50s, VL-ASROC even by the bleakest inte...

Re: Brazil
To my knowledge, Phalanx is not being removed due to US objections. The Brazilian Navy doesn't use the system on any existing class, preferring older but more economical 40mm Bofors-based mounts which reflect the lower-threat environment they operate in, so they'd need to stand up a supply chain for...

Being licensed to use a design is very different from owning 100% of the IP. Which happens to be the Type 31 requirement. Donald-san is quite correct on this issue. Where is this language used? Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
To go cheaper/easier, it would seem very do-able and cost-effective to slap a Phalanx on the "B" spot. Not as much capability, but also probably not a ton of cost. Then the option exists later to upgrade to Phalanx with laser later.
