Re: Australian Defence Force
The 96 cell HunterB2 shows what I always thought is what a waste of space is the T26 mission equipment bay which was designed for Special Forces, personally don't think there is any logic in a frigate CONOPS for a SF element, better left to the properly fitted out amphib ships. The Absalon-class is...

Re: Australian Defence Force
IF the Australians cancel the Hunter which looks a possibility, with the recent precedent set by the Sept 2021 cancellation of the multi-billion deal for the 12 French submarines to be replaced by AUKUS, would think by far the strongest favourite to replace the Hunter would be the US Navy (Fincanti...

By commissioned boats on paper. But most likely out to 2040 will be a mixed RAN/USN crew
RAN is know as the US 7&1/2 fleet

Re: Australian Defence Force
Hunters are using Aegis as a base line CMS our CSO's are already using both Aegis & CEFAR why would the RAN want to change from a proven Australian capability. Not really sure why there is an obsession from UK members that the RAN should abandon CEA to get Hunters in the water quicker. They see...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Cooperative Engagement Capability (CEC) integrated fire control capability between the fleet units so whoever is in the best situation can fire from information provided by another ship its this is what people are forgetting on why RAN wants CEFAR with Aegis CMS as baseline. The Hobarts have CEC so...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Just depends how many hulls Australia need. 6x Hunter (simplified) 6x A140 6x AAW 6x Long Range OPV+ (Helo, 8xNSM) The above looks like a good mix for Australian taxpayers and the RAN. If the funds could be found a fleet balance similar to what RN is aiming for could be what the RAN really needs, 9...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Would be ironic but I wonder if they would go back to the French for this lighter frigate and buy the FDI frigate. Really can’t see it. If it’s not a long range OPV design it really should be A140. All those Mk41 cells will just be too tempting. I really done see what an opv does for Australia part...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Could anyone give an update on the reasoning behind the Australian OPV procurement please? Is it politically untouchable? In reality no program is untouchable as long as they come up with a viable alternative, talk is that some may be transferred to ABF, but they have their own problems in getting ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
The most pragmatic decision may be to just carry on as planned and insist BAE sorts out the problems. But the problems are largely not BAE. It is the Aus DOD. The requirement to fit a complex radar\CMS system and change the ship into a quasi cruiser. Although the requirement to do so was in the ori...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
I found the transcript, https://parlinfo.aph.gov.au/parlInfo/search/display/display.w3p;query=Id%3A%22committees%2Fcommjnt%2F27343%2F0000%22 Mr Hudson: In terms of margin, the margin tonnages, cooling weight margins are classified. I've got to talk around this topic. I hope you understand. I did get...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Do they need it? They are damaging their ASW capability so much. As far as i am aware they have not compromised its ASW capabilities by adding CEFAR, just increased its surface Air warfare capabilities. Hunter is apparently broader in beam than T26 so will need more power to push it along. The ques...

Re: Australian Defence Force
From an old news article back in June 2022: Navantia recently offered to develop a further three destroyers to the RAN by 2030, doubling the size of the fleet to six. The program would cost an estimated $6 billion – $2 billion for each vessel. Navantia Australia managing director Israel Lozano Barr...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Happy to see my personal preference for more Hobarts in the mix. Did not realise that a radar upgrade for the Hobarts was being considered as well. Interesting. That appears to be a commonly held view. Why not build a simpler T26 style Hunter class to secure both the program and the investment alre...

Re: Australian Defence Force
Could that mean the oZ gov might build ( to get the experience & skillset ) for example 4 or 5 T31 then when their "Hunter" design is finalised build the complex/expensives ships later ? Anything is possible but highly unlikely with this government as long as it does not have to stump...

Lots of strategic bumbling in Australia IMHO. Re: Australian Defence Force
1 Brigade will have one battalion (5/7RAR) that can only train properly in the dry season. Not a credible formation. The rest will be lucky to maintain a 'ready' battalion battle group, at best. These are placeholder ORBATs until they try to use it and can't, or someone useful comes along. Could be...
