Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
1 billion pounds a ship is basically a burke destroyer. US$1.7 billion for a Type 26. US$1.843 for a Burke. Although given the UK are paying heavily for the R&D in the cost of their ships, it could potentially be far lower for a foreign customer that does not have to pay to design and develop t...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
I do wonder, why do we class the carriers as being to valuable to risk close to the shore, but not an LPD/LPH? Surely loosing either is an unacceptable loss? Both are an unacceptable loss but one costs £225m with maybe £100m worth of assets on board, the other costs £3.1bn with around £3bn worth of...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Given the fact that a drone was able to land on HMS QE while it was on sea trials, having some sort of laser system on it would be an excellent defense against drone attacks as well as many others. What are the current options, fire an expensive CAM/Aster missile or fire CIWS, both of which if used ...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
The RN need to find a workable alternative. Defense has been stripped to the bone. It is an option of more money or lose a key national military capacity which is essential for an expeditionary focused island nation. You can say money does not grow on trees, but look at the recent budget, the Treas...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)
I have saw several articles mention possible cuts to AJAX numbers as options in the review. Positive upside is, hopefully strike is wiped out, not that we would have the manpower for them with possibly losing 12,000 soldiers anyway.

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
There are mounting budget pressures, and this is a plan to relieve some of the pressure. Why is that unreasonable? Lord Hutton (former DS) was speaking during a debate on British defence forces in the House of Lords where he said: “I am absolutely opposed to the United Kingdom acting unilaterally—f...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Unless the Commander of the aircraft carrier can guarantee that the other NATO escorts can protect the carrier under the same ROE and in the same response time as our escorts is there a point in leaving such a crucial duty to another Navy? If a NATO escort is assisting in the protection of our carr...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Which of it's deployments would constitute a high threat environment during peace time I would say that that type of deployment would only be used during wartime or in high threat situations, such as if a UK CSG deployed to North Korea, the South China Sea or the Gulf during heightened tensions. We...

You also said that Mastiff was not used by infantry and only operated in rear areas. No. Mastiff is used by infantry, hence how we both said it was used by the heavy protected mobility battalions. And yes, in a peer conflict, Mastiff is used in the rear behind the main body of the armoured formatio...

fine except that heavy protected mobility infantry battalions are seeing their vehicles replaced by something lighter JLT-V is lighter, more mobile, and offers slightly more protection than Mastiff. HMS Prince of Wales is needed to take over the second stage of F35 trials in 2019 while HMS Queen Elizabeth is in its scheduled period of certification inspections in dry dock. I don't understand why the British Army never assesses French equipments I think they do. The main difference is the UK likes to go medium-heavy, France likes to go light-medium. Stuff like the VBCI, it is an excellent vehicle but I think the British Army thinks it is too light, they want something...

Even if the UK doesn't get to build the type 26s, the cost of research is distributed. Some of subsystems will still be built in the UK. True. Was referring more to the actual block building. Hangar roof. Looks a little cramped. Maybe in place of the decoy system between the CIWS and Hanger? http:/...
