Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

The San Antonios are a Rolls Royce option and again too expensive but very capable platforms and too big for what we are aiming for, being able to land at most a reinforced Commando and even then not all at once as the logistics would be landed by the Bays. The area our existing amphibious platform...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

In my view overkill for the intended mission - not that they would not be good at it Agreed, complete overkill for APT(N) and APT(S) but what's the alternative? A £250m T31 with up to 120 crew? Which would be cheaper? Add in the fact that keeping Bulwark in extended readiness still costs money and ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Compared to the cost of HMS Ocean or a French LHD the cost is huge, and for what? Space for more aircraft than the UK will ever have. Oh I agree compared to them it is expensive but if I remember right both of the former are built closer to commercial standards where the later is built to full nava...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

And the RAF will be happy because they get all the F-35s and can buy the A model. Why would they get that ? I was looking at the AEW as a more capable alternative to crowns nest and the EW capablity that would be lacking in our air wing. If those 2 are acquired then the attack version makes sence a...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

As for the RN having auxiliary carriers in the form of LHDs, dong so greatly increases the cost of the platform and you are very limited in the size of airwing unless you want to use the LHD purely as a carrier, but there are still limitation. One thing that gets me thinking when this sort of quote...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

This is what we should be investing in for the QEs. From what Iv read it’ll have a longer on station and higher altitude than a merlin and is incorporating radar elements from the Hawkeye for its AEW set up, that long with an electronic warfare version and and attack version would be spot on. https:...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

We have a F-35 capable amphibious warfare platform, it is called HMS Prince of Wales and that is the only one we are going to get. I am more concerned that we actually get replacements for Albion and Bulwark and the RFAs of the Bay class. The way thing are we could end up with a number of contracto...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

For me in an ideal world I’d like to see 2 x LHD 2 x LPD ( with hanger ) 4 x LSD ( modern bay with hanger ) What I’d like to see and hoping could be done 2 x LHD 3-4 x LSD ( modern bay with hanger ) What I’d expect as a bare minimum 1 x LHD 3 x LSD ( modern bay with hanger ) I’d personally like the ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

So has hmsqe been on a fat diet of lard and put on a few tonnes weighing in at about 75k tonnes now? Thought was about 65- 72 k depending on which measurements it is Where’d you see that ? I heard nothing of there weight increasing since it went from the pre build figure of 65k to post build figure...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

I must admit Iv never really understood this whole LSG concept, I always thought the LSS where meant to be SF platforms like MV Ocean raider with a slightly larger accommodation to allow “raiding” ops by the RM. I can understand them being used to join up with a wider amphibious role to play a simil...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

They can’t do both MCM and amphibious ops at the same time Correct they can't, and the future system should be platform agnostic allowing the RN to choose what is most suitable for each use case. That could be a LSD, T26, LSS, from land, or from a contracted ship. If implemented well it really shou...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

Well lets hope they have two parts of F all to do with the RN then and don't cost us the Bay class or something really useful. They shouldn't do but if the Bay's are threatened the FLSS program should be cancelled immediately. I think the recent MCM trails with Mounts Bay could be very significant....

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

I agree the name is very misleading and makes them be thought of more in the way of the carriers of s large well equipped LPD.

For me why not name them as there meant to be use a SF support vessel

Re: Multi Role Vehicle – Protected - MRV(P)

. Going down this route with foxhound would not only of giving the army a very capable platform ( IMO a better one ) but also built up a high skilled industry in the UK that has the potential for exports. We already have a skill base for manufacturing such vehicles. We built foxhound and UK-spec a ...

Re: Multi Role Vehicle – Protected - MRV(P)

Unless something unexpected happen we will be using the JLTV aka MRV(P) 4x4, as it has been offered at a price that cannot be beaten by the competition. yes the basic vehicle will be built in the US but they will be kitted out in the UK if things go ahead. Foxhound was/is a good vehicle but it has ...

Re: Multi Role Vehicle – Protected - MRV(P)

I still prefer the foxhound family, not only British built but the types that are meant to be already there seem more flexible. It would also negate the cost of setting up a new surply chain and training. It may be trivial but the foxhound family just look more of a British style to me aswell ...

Re: Multi Role Vehicle – Protected - MRV(P)

Don't know if this has been posted before but it gives a good idea of he variant of the JLTV that are available even thought this video is about its parent. Using a combination of long and short wheel base variants we could fulfil all the MRV(P) requirements with a common vehicle. https://www.youtu...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

I’m not sure what the obsession is with getting multiple unfolded chinooks in the hanger. Chinook has a manual folding option not great in all conditions but if necessary and both need hangered for maintenance could be done. If they remain lashed to deck or only one while the other is in the hanger...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

All this talking of hanger size seems to only focus on what will be carried during regular peace time when it should be looked st as what would need to be carried during the high leave ops. For me a hanger large enough to operate and maintain 2 chinooks blades unfolded is more than large enough, th...

Re: Future Littoral Strike Ships

One of the core reasons for the FLSS is that it would conduct operations using SF and small RM detachments where and when needed. In theory they could have quite a high operational tempo being sent to areas where they are needed on a year round basis. This is the criteria they would need to be desi...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

With the MOD now happy to transfer kit from the T23s to the T31’s and buy the looks of it this will not be counted in the £1.25bn budget I see no such argument to date. It clearly states, the 1.25B GBP will include such costs. ... and all the talk of what CMS would be used if Leander doesn’t win wo...

The fitted for not with option much how type 23 started out with HMS Norfolk. But we don’t yet know what type 26 will be fitted with or what it will be like once built we hope it will be good. In the end your looking to replace the asw capability of type 23 and it didn’t have missions bays, mk41 or...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

https://twitter.com/NavyLookout/status/1109041728995147776?s=20 Can't see TACTICOS taking over from BAE CMS-1 any time soon, is it even likley that the T31's would get it if Arrowhead 140 wins? Seems unlikley at this stage. Surely if arrowhead 140 is chosen it’ll be on the condition that BAE CMS-1 ...
