Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

The only shocking thing in all of this is that it took the waste of so much time before something as evident and unavoidable as the fucking Sun was finally acknowledged.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

10 B and 20 C are the purchase for 2020 alone; someone on that site screwed up badly on the figure. There was a reduction from earlier plans over the 5 years, but it is something like 14 aircraft in total that get deferred, plus some Super Hornets as well. C2D2 played a part, but buying more ships, ...

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)

all retained Hercs will be short body Nope, it was going to be the exact opposite, now it is 13 long and 1 short. In my dreams the short ones become at least 2 and under the "VENOM kinetic strike capability" thing announced by Williamson a couple of tanker/gunship HARVEST HAWK kits are pr...

Moreover it is obvious that with France calling the shots in the other programme it is Thales that will do all the work that Leonardo and Elettronica are good at.

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

France's language over FCAS is, as always, spectacularly rich.

Didn't take Brexit for them to drag their feet and delay FASGW to 2020+, and to quit TELEMOS when it was time to build the thing.

They could at least shut the hell up.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I dont know about ASRAAM, but the USMC jets have indeed open compatibility with Paveway IV with QE deployments in mind. All F-35's can operate all weapons that version supports regardless of their nationality. There are no sub-variants except for the Israeli aircraft. In theory. But that would mean...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

The LMM was fired from a modified DS30 mount as far back as 2013, actually, at Eskmeals. The Royal Navy interest in it for beefing up close range defences is actually pretty ancient. They even tested the gliding, mini-bomb adaptation of it by launching it from a Lynx 5000 feet up in the air. Wonder ...

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)

Was working off the numbers in my head - CTA guns 215 (plus ten for testing) - Joint Fires Control, 23 vehicles, and Ground Based Surveillance, 24 vehicles - the former have turrets (fake guns, not to be easily recognised, and saving space inside the turret for 'more essential' things) Warrior FV51...

Thales UK is still involved as i understand the commander's sight is still a BGTI, while the gunner as the CRONUS by Instro. Might also be involved in other internal things to the turret.

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)

Most of the delay is due to the turret. LM initially said they could make do by cutting the front off the existing one and build on it. They completed manned firing trials by the end of 2014. Unfortunately, for whatever reason, despite completing the firing trials it was decided the solution was act...

The APS was never meant to be part of the LEP as it is being run separately under Project MEDUSA and ICARUS with the aim of coming up with one standardized modular sensor system that can be mated to an APS procured probably from abroad and used on multiple fleets. That BLACK NIGHT had Iron Fist is j...

So, about 220 mil. euros ( or about 250 mil. USD ) per plane for Norway. Or, 3,9 billion USD for 9 Posidons for the UK- about 433 mil. USD per plane for the UK. The fact that Norway is looking at having crews trained in Lossiemouth and aircraft serviced there should make it clear what the differenc...

For whatever reason, the gunpod was never supposed to be part of the british IOC. Procurement of the pods was left for later. Part of block IV, unless it is postponed further.

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

The limitations to the Harrier's role are due to the fact that only a part of the fleet is the AV-8B+ with the radar. AMRAAM without radar obviously wasn't a thing, but the ones with the radar definitely have A2A as part of their mission. As of their 2018 Aviation Plan, the Harrier frontline fleet i...

My Sarcasm Support Measures are not sure whether you are being serious or not. Anyway, the mortar is installed on the front of the turret, to the left of the gun. You can see it in many frames, but most clearly around 2:46, folded against the turret's glacis.

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Soldier magazine notes that the 60mm mortar can be operated from inside the turret. Cool, but i'm guessing that's while it is loaded, then someone has to reload from outside for obvious reasons. Wonder how difficult it would be to retrofit the mortar that the israeli Merkava uses, which is breech lo...

The old ones had left and the new ones weren't quite there yet. Ark Royal and Ocean did the honors, with the rest traveling on US ships. The armoured vehicles were to disembark via american LCAC but since the beach was mined and there was no urgency, they ended up taking an indirect route and swingi...

The first replacement MCM ship is not expected before 2028 at the earliest, so it is anything from 10 years upwards.
