Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Is there any word on a more concrete order number yet or is it still the vague 500-800 that was put out before ?

And do we know if any will be fitted with the CT40 or similar ?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

from Jake1992 The problem is the RN brass all MOD brass for that matter are there to serve the will of the political masters, to implement the plans and ideas they have for the forces not the other way round. It is also very hard for the brass to do or say anything when it is the politians that hol...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Joint operations, by necessity are going to become the default for NATO and other operations. It is just the way it is going to be. No NATO country had been willing to spend what is needed for defence for decades and that is purely down to politics, in a nutshell defence doesn't mean votes. Just lo...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I think what needs to happen in the short term is that European navies and the RN need to start thinking in terms of have a Carrier group at sea all year round based around the 2 QE class and the French carrier with a QE carrier group looking something like 1 carrier 1 Astute 2 Type 45's 1 Type 26 ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

CAMM could never replace Aster, its 'control fins only' vs 'thrust vectoring & fins' respectively. That extra level of control on Aster gives it a much higher probability of interception against more difficult targets. Plus Aster will get Anti Ballistic Missile capabilities, something that CAMM...

Something Iv been wondering about, with the development of CAMM-ER to pretty much replace aster 15 in the mid range missile, and it's ability to be quad packed in mk41 and sylver lurnchers like CAMM can be had there been any thought or planning on developing the family further to replace aster 30 ?...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

My vote is soryu class from Japan. Hmm, yes, Soryu's are great boats, but they are, IMHO, too close to SSNs ( and too close with a price to real SSN ), so something smaller like Type 214 or Scorpene would be better for the RN. According to wiki ( yes wiki lol ) they coming in at around £400m each, ...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)

I like the idea of SSKs for home waters and train and understand the rational of an off the self design built abroad ( I'd go with Japan's Soryu class ) but the question I have is will they be allowed to be built abroad or would they fall under the RN war ships built only in the UK ??

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

You could replace Warrior with an Ajax-derived IFV, but what would be the advantage? Likewise Boxer, it will be increasingly ageing platform. I would think a better solution would be to look at a common armoured battlegroup vehicle, or at least technology set, for MBTs, IFVs, repair and recovery, e...

Re: Warrior Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

So the Warriors planned to have its turret upgrade to the CT40 to extend its useful life to the mid 2030s, but has there been any thought to its replacement ? As with the woeful state of our percurment set up as is planning would need to start a good 10 years before introduction. Iv heard talk of th...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

My understanding is that it can be used from the same VLS as CAMM, having a combination of CAMM-ER and CAMM on the T26 and possible the T31 would greatly increase their untility and survivability They use the same launch system and by all accounts are the same diameter, but are of a different lengt...

It might be extended. A little jake1992 in light of russian new. Hypo missile threat. I thought it was meant to come out last month has it been pushed back again or just quietly swept under the rug ?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The thing I repeatedly see on this thread is the blame being passed, blaming the mod for not keeping control over project budget as we see above over the T45. Now yes the mod not keeping control over these budget holds some of the blame but we keep over looking the main cause and that is simply HMG ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Interesting, as the newer class is only 2 and a half meters shorter and a third of a meter less in beam ... we can always do a "t-42" and add a section :) More difficult to do "a Burke" as they got their bath tub shape so that, as platforms with the high-up and massive AEGIS, th...

Re: French Armed Forces

Wasn't the PA2 the French QE not designed to be conventional powered due to the trouble they have experienced with CdG ? I really can't see why they would go for anything bigger than the PA2, and if going nuclear surely cost would limit them to something between CdG and a QE, not something that woul...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

@Caribbean: the point is why does the T31e need to be “globally self-deploying”?Rather than operating close to the UK or permanently forward based? Endurance and range costs, in both size of the ship and crew. Also it requires additional kit such as RAS. Better to have a smaller ship with more on i...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

My point is if commonality was introduced across the fleet going forward design costs for new batches of vessels would be reduced, spares and maintainence costs would be reduced and the various different yards could, with the added experience of building multiple units of a common hull design make ...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

The T=31e must not fall victim of mission creep, with the RN trying to turn them into full warships to compensate for the reduction in the T-26 numbers. Yes give them the capacity to evolve as other European design have done, but their initial capabilities should be limited to a medium calibre gun,...
