Re: Boeing E-3D Sentry AEW.1 (AWACS) (RAF)

Deal as gd as done Looks like it is. And for once we should all be grateful as this seems a very positive, cost neutral, increase in capability. A year ago we were facing a long drawn out upgrade of the E-3 fleet that had the potential, if we're honest, to be continually cut during its duration. He...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

To an extent this is a gd example of there being little joined up thinking. If instead of banging the carrier strike drum and considered a more expeditionary strike group arrangement with less emphasis and smaller numbers of the fixed wing element and more the rotary with buy in from an expanded Chi...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

I've yet to be convinced that ending amphibious operations at combined-arms BG level is anything but foolish (it is the insurance policy that makes strike viable). Against what level of opposition do you think this is useful? Is a serria leone opposition how far up the scale to we go. If it’s a uk ...

The USN which is why they are re introducing the anti-ship Tomahawk for both longer range and larger bang. The Harpoon is still a useful weapon but a single hit will not guarantee a kill. The low density that the RN and even USN currently have with warships carrying a maximum of eight, its slow spe...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

If that was the plan, there would be absolutely no need for the RAF to be involved with the F35 at all! The aircraft would be an FAA exclusive programme. You are making far too many assertions on here, which are at best misleading, or possibly even malign. Fair enough you don’t need to belie...

Who says this “The warhead on the Harpoon is simply too small and we lack density to overwhelm an opponent with the limited number of missile carried by our surface vessels ” is true? I would say at this time programs with the French will be extremely strained, to that end I would adopt nsm/jsm and ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

LJ That is the plan 7 typhoon 2 f35 until 2040. The question for team tempest is what replaces typhoon. The preferred option it seems is a uk fighter program, should that prove uneconomical then the answer is likely to be a variant of the f35 and we become an all f35 force and end the uk military av...

ACC I understand what Jake is saying but if they move the deterrent sub replacement out of the defence budget they’ll simply move the budget with it. What people are really asking for with this option is a 3.2b pound defence funding increase to pay for the sub replacement and that isn’t going to hap...

Jake If you think it serves no military purpose then cut it! Just like what happened when we177 was removed and nuclear Q stood down in the 90s. It stays because it ensures the need for large conventional forces to deter a nuclear state is not required and as such is a military capability. You could...

So what was that times story last year 5 frigates and the wildcats or the Albion’s be rest assured the piper must be paid! If the axe has to fall it has got to be on the light infantry. To relieve the manning issues and get all T45's back to sea it will take 4 Type 23's to be decommissioned early. ...
