Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
12 uk F35 & 12 us marine atleast.... pow this time ????? Surely by 2025 the target must 24x UK F35s? That would be quite a sight if it could be done. What is the plan for CSG2024? For me what would be great would be 10 x FAA , 10 x RAF and 10 x USMC making 30 jets on POW lets push the boat out ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
I would argue for 22 throughly credible AAW,ASW and GP escorts with the gaps filled by highly cost effective OPVs. Well - 24 escorts for me (and I'm still not certain whether it would be better to have 9 x T26, 9 x T31 & 6 x T83, or 8 of each), but otherwise that sounds about right. The T32 &qu...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
T31 programme cost: £400m+ USN 4th constellation contract: £422m. Considering that USN has x5 more to order, the well equipped constellation class will probably eventually be very close price wise to T31. Very different but this is still notable. also, In typical fashion, T31 is stated to have a ~1...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Went it comes to what to put in all these cells the main one for me is Spear. Spear 2 ( Brimstone) cost 100K and has a range of 60 km's if we could make it VL with soft launch and a bigger motor having 32 of these would really help the escort side of things along with anything within 40km's of the s...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
with 32 cells we could push VL Spear 3 in attack and EW this could allow type 31 to have a load out of 32 x CAMM , 32 x Spear-3 , 16 x FCASW and 8 to 16 x NSM add to this its Wildcat with 20 LMM or 4 x Sea Venom We could also add in a containerised TAS if working with the CSG which could now look l...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
For me now if we could say build another 3 T-31's and upgrade the RB2's to have a 3D radar 40mm gun capable of operating POD's the navy would be in a good place Babcock's could go on to build 8 x MHCP ships to cover the 3 x RB1 replacement's and 5 x LSV something like 110 by 16.5 meters , crew 45 + ...

If you fit the 16 Mk-41 cells to Type 45 it could have a load out of
48 x Aster 30 , 32 x CAMM , 8 x SM-6 and 8 x NSM

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
It very good to have options but this feels reactionary and a bit unfocused, lets hope some more details come out soon. Apologies but I respectfully disagree. This is the very definition of increased lethality. It does raise more than a few question’s though: - Can 32x Mk41 cells and 8x NSM be fitt...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
If it gets all 32 cells it puts Type 31 on a par with Type-26 as far as strike cells so we could now see a load out of 32 x CAMM , 24 Land strike and 8 x NSM anyway with 32 Mk-41's it is not a paper frigate all it needs now is a TAS So it also looks like the Navy have played a blinder and got their ...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
For me right now what we have is 3 x RB1's , 5 x RB2's and 5 T-31's on order in build with this we could have 3 x Patrol sqn's something like UK home waters including the Baltic = 3 x RB1's ( shame we sold Clyde we could have had 4 OPV's here ) to be replaced with 4 new OPV's South Atlantic includi...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I think now that there are a number of UK Fishery patrol vessels outside of the RN, the requirement has changed. Whilst there is still an element of traditional low level constabulary duties, even the B1s have taken on a larger share in terms of escorting foreign warships through UK waters and even...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
For me if we could get to a point where we had 3 Patrol Sqn's with the first 2 overseas made up of T-31 and RB2's and the third made up of 4 x new OPV's in Home waters and covering joint training in the Baltic the Navy would be in a good place

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
As Scanter 2D is only on the B2 Rivers, given the costs surely it’s more cost effective to replace it completely with a common radar than supporting two types? Good point. Cheaper and less-maintenance load is essential. At the same time, I think, a simple OPV like River B1 is very much needed in RN...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
For me even once the T-31's come in to service keeping the RB2's forward deployed would be a good way of really growing the navy by having 5 x T-31 and 5 x upgraded RB2's in two overseas patrol sqn's For right now I think we could build 4 x new 80m OPV's fitted with Giraffe 3D radar , bottom end CM...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
So it is in the same price range which is good but as said it would need to come in to service across the escort fleet or with the army to be good value. At this time we know we know the Army uses Giraffe 3D radars for Sky Sabre and has just ordered 11 more with one going to the Navy. So for me foll...

For the radar, I will propose Rada's "Multi-Mission Hemispheric Radar" (or its enhanced version). It is Counter-UAS, Very Short-Range Air Defense (VSHORAD), Counter Rocket, Artillery and Mortar (C-RAM) sensor. It is an AESA plate covering 90degree region. https://www.drsrada.com/wp-conten...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
In the light of new contacts and costs of new kit what could be done to the RB2's to upgrade them 1) fit a Giraffe 1X 3D radar cost 1.85 million 2) fit a 40mm Mk4 cost 4 million 3) 2 x new Jackal drones 600K So for a cost of say 8 million per ship we could see the RB2's take a big step forward as a ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
We will not have enough Type 26/ 45's to forward deploy them in Oz the Type 31 is the perfect ship for EoS larger , low crew & long legged with a helicopter It is all about the clarify of the strategic objectives and the prioritisation of money and resources to meet them. I will argue that “Pat...
