Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

It will be interesting to see that what the MoD "Bolts" onto the T-31e, if anything, if the balloon ever went up or tensions rapidly escalate over a period of time with another country.

Re: Boeing RC-135W Airseeker/Rivet Joint (RAF)

Hopefully this will give the UK Government enough food for thought for them to reconsider their decision to allow Huawei to have limited participation in the establishment of the UK's 5G network and force certain companied (3G) to remove such components from the limited network they have already est...

Re: Royal Marine Artillery

I have often had trouble with the split in ownership of different sizes of Mortars in the British Military. Many other nations have 120mm Mortars within their Infantry Battalion sized units and it is something we should have adopted along time ago, especially with the shrinkage in the number of Roya...

Re: SDSR 2020

Oh I fully understand the theory, but I also understand reality where some Mandarin in Whitehall decides that if Supermarkets can use a "just in time" system, there should be no reason why the Armed Forces shouldn't be able to do the same. So first they stopped orders being placed for new ...

Re: SDSR 2020

The MoD tried to move its logistics to a "Just in time" model during the latter part of the 1990s, with the aim of greatly reducing the stock level of spares held in depot and it was a disaster. When it can take up to two years to take delivery of even a disposable spare item, once you hal...

Re: Australian Defence Force

If the RAN want to go down the "Nuke" root then why not just build the Suffren class, that should meet all the requirements, just import the power plants from France and build the rest in country? Just a thought not a serious suggestion mind you.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

One thing is for sure, there is still plenty of room on the T-31. As for the Standalone 3 cell ExLS, the compactness of the launcher should allow it to be installed on numerous vessels if we went with it. Having say the planned SSS set up for receive it if needed would be an interesting option, and ...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

I don't think those who have criticized the F-35 are running out of steam because they have been proved wrong, but more likely they realize that so much has been invested in it, it has to succeed even if that means throwing more money at it and even bodging a few issues. Except for updated F-15/16/1...

Re: USA Armed Forces

I wonder if they USN will reduce further the number of LCS it intends to purchase with the aim to have a mix of the FFX, increasing the number purchased, and DDGs as its core fleet, hopefully complimented by a dozen or so LSC.

Re: USA Armed Forces

Well the USN has realised that 8 AShMs per platform is not enough for a single ship or Task Force to launch a large enough strike against a peer opponent. I wonder how long it will take other NATO and Allied navies to follow suit.

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

I suppose that is what you get when you fix the price and the capability demands, the contractor has to find the most affordable components where ever they may be sourced from. Wasn't the criteria to build the ship in the UK with little or no mention of where the parts came from except the GFE?

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Not so sure about this. I can see 1st (UK) Division being the support force for 3rd Division, considering it already contains most of the Medical services and the engineering and logistical units that would support a persistent deployment, but it is the stated aspiration for the Army to maintain a &...

Re: SDSR 2020

omitted the paratrooper bde based in Italy; not because the speed with which it would arrive, but rather for it being based in the Med area has reasons (to keep it in reserve). I forgot about those also. I am also dubious about our 1st Combat Aviation Brigade. Not having seen its full make up but i...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Going medium, and perhaps wheeled, means the Army has to purchase a tremendous lot of stuff anew, considering that what it has is all thought for the heavy, tracked formations. I'm thinking TITAN, TROJAN, TERRIER, the SHORAD air defence, the artillery... I agree the Army will have to purchase addit...

Re: SDSR 2020

I cannot help but think that if, and it is still a big "IF", Russia decided on taking military action against NATO and in particular the Baltics, it would have to look at a broader campaign, mainly using SF, that would include the far north and direct action against Poland. The Baltics wou...

Re: SDSR 2020

And I have never suggested that the British Army should remove Amin Battle Tanks from its inventory, but rather retain two Regiments worth to support the Mechanised Brigades when they eventually arrive to compliment the heavier units fielded by our allies. The NATO MNDs are pretty formidable formati...

Meh, if so ( armoured and mechanised forces allmost useless, light forces useless too for NATO )- why try at all? Also, if the transport issues are so great, then why not forward base one armoured brigade in say Poland, or some of Baltic countries ( if they are not considere too expendable )? I mea...

That would actually make a lot of sense, complementing or supplementing the existing command ships that seem to have been around forever, such as the Blue Ridge class, being more survivable and able to operate in far more unfriendly areas.

I would be keener on 16 Air Assault together with the regular SF being nominally assigned to 6th Division. The reserve SF units are already under its control and as I see 16 AA as a complimentary formation to the SF I see this being a logical move. I also see the Infantry Brigade currently in 6th Di...

Re: SDSR 2020

I do not think it will be possible to field a UK only division against a peer opponent such a Russia, given the time that is expected to be available to get the forces in the field, weeks at the most. It is thought it will take months to fully deploy a UK Division comprising of the Armoured Infantry...
