Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
"Locating", integrating with CMS, & testing/certification does not require the ship to be in a dockyard. I do not think ExLs will be acquired. I think the existing mushrooms (number to be determined) will remain and the Mk 41 added alongside for use by anti-ship & land attack miss...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
4. Why would the MoD be able to create a good Plan B if it can't create a good Plan A? It is easy. In many big programs, there is in many case a "fall-back plan" to save the day. It is even inherent in Systems Engineering. Just MOD omit that item from there program. Including it is easy (...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Thanks. I am not arguing the point one way or another, just pointing out the options. It’s easy to just ask for more and more of anything but it’s the outcome that is paramount. It comes down to three main points: 1. If extra funding is provided to increase the U.K. ASW capabilities and safeguard c...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Yes the RNZN has opened the door on this so as said at least the first 3 should be given 40 CAMM and NSM However if RN wanted to go a little mad latter down the line they could go for a fitting of 40 CAMM and 16 Mk-41 by removing 20 of the CAMM and replacing with 16 Mk-41 and then removing the forw...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
I think it's typical for a warship to have a docking period after initial builder trials have shaken out some bugs & defects. I would imagine the CIP would be done then. 12 months is way too long to add a Mk 41. Maybe a couple of months in parallel to the defect fixing. If just locating a "...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
To say the truth, what I feel is…. IMO the U.K. must be absolutely sure that only 8x T26 is enough before shifting attention to the T83. Now that the price has stabilised around £900m it’s completely transparent as to what additional hulls would cost. Are more T26 genuinely required or should SSN, ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
More recent renders of the T31 show the 2x3 T26\Albatross NG Mushroom farm which is different to both the T23 Sea Wolf retrofit and the Anzac upgrade. It does not matter. The system on RNZNS is more high density fit-out than what you've shown. Actually, the new 6-cell system, which I think is just ...

Which RN (or even another navy's) ship is in service with the version of the mushroom farm to be fitted to T31? https://www.arrowhead140.com/wp-content/uploads/2022/05/45169220-Composition-2.jpg https://i2-prod.plymouthherald.co.uk/article3311904.ece/ALTERNATES/s1227b/1_type.jpg https://i2-prod.ply...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Based on that the T83 needs to have the design finalised in 2028, contracts signed in 2030 and steel cut in 2031/2032. Absolutely no chance of that timescale being accurate unless the T83 is a T26 with Sampson Mk2 plonked on it. Looks like the OPVs will be built in Govan again. To say the truth, wh...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
My issue is that I do not see which of the priorities is the T31 actually addressing. The priority is not a GP ship, it’s to either to tackle sub surface threats or provide wide area / BMD defence. They were ordered to addressed the following priorities: Be Cheap. Keep our escort numbers at 19, so ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
The Initial Operating Capability for the Type 26 Class is forecast to be October 2028. All ships are expected to enter service between 2028 and 2035. Not bad. This means, HMS Glasgow will be delivered to RN on late 2026, and move into first-of-class ship trail (which normally takes 2 years). Again,...

...https://vardmarine.com/wp-content/uploads/2021/09/VARD-7-115-NGOPV-Infographic.pdf Clearly an impressive vessel but too much capability for an RN OPV+. For me it looks very much low standard in damage control. The NGOPV in military mode requires a crew of 150. Vard 7 125 OPV requires 50, with si...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Changing the topic and moving over the "scaling" discussion from the River Class (OPV) thread, I think we need to move the conversation from a vague one about scaling and size of the RN, to something that is actually aligned to priority requirements grounded in reality. Very interesting d...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Building an additional Frigate factory in Birkenhead isn’t realistic. If it isn’t more capable OPVs to fill the gap what do you propose? If me, I shall base my plan on “using River B1s crew” here, and propose - building 3 River B1 replacement simple-simple OPVs with a crew of 25 each - up-equip the...

… • RN would then have a compact but extremely well balanced fleet plus a clear pathway to continue enlarging if the global security landscape started to deteriorate further. By 2030 RN would have: - 6x T45 - 8x T26/T23 ASW - 5x T31 GP with 40x CAMM and 8x NSM - 5x OPV+ with Wildcat and 57mm, 2x40m...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
I once thought that an OPV with 40mm 3P and Counter-UAS radar (adding Leonardo TMMR, counter-UAC AESA) can be a helpful asset to counter the drones-era. But the Red Sea Houthi's issue made me think twice. T31 with more CAMM can be more important? A gun with 3D-type radar and EO-FCS can be used for s...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
Again I still think as follows: A: if we want a new built "up-armed", "100+m hull with helicopter hanger", but with OPV standard ship, it will be Spanish BAM and Dutch Holland. We know it. It is not a stupid idea. This is a ship "in-between" River B2 and T31. B: if we f...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)
So on the question of core crew the Independence class LCS has a core crew of 40 And therefore, LCS never deploys with only core crew. To my understanding, LCS crew is always somewhere around 70-80, and one of the reason was to keep the ship running (just not go back to port when there is an issue)...

S-band wave length is 7.5cm to 15 cm. What frequency ARTISAN 3D is using? Artisan is an E/F band radar 2 - 4 GHz, NATO classification, but generally known under the older IEEE nomenclature as S-band, many navies, not all e.g. SMART-L, led by USN changed from L to S-band with the SPY- 1 as the volum...
