Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Diplomacy is basically broken down to how much money where does it go and what do I get in return. The law of economic warfare. Diplomacy is done by the diplomatic staff at the embassies across the world that presence is permanent where the decision makers are. If you don’t get what you want the co...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
It isn't an obsession it is realty five are on order to replace the five T23 GP. The T31 isn't mediocre it provides a platform that is inherently easy to maintain, requires lower crewing and provides great range and capability cost effectively. It can scale from a more than competent light frigate ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Soft power is a fiction. A fiction perpetuated by this government and its many shades since Blair, based on it playing nice in the media. There is economic power and there is military power. If China comes along and offers 10 new power stations on very east terms to Bangladesh or a nice new 500m do...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
What do you mean by meaningful mass are you referring to combat mass as I do believe that the RB2's could being meaningful mass in terms of low level yet important roles and even war roles like mine laying and making up numbers in convoy groups Thanks for right question. I totally agree "RB2's...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
https://thinpinstripedline.blogspot.com/2024/02/a-tale-of-two-royal-navys-ambitious.html?m=1 Looking at all the past RAN plan, the ambition will never be met. But, cutting 2 ANZAC will be solid, 6 remaining. Along with 3 Hobert class and 6 T26RAN, 4-6 light frigates shall be there, at most. I shall ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
What I am saying is that, OPV+ is OPV+, will not add any mass on war fighting assets. If RN want more OPV immediately, it is easy: lease RNZN Otago-class OPVs (now both are in reserve ( because of lack of crew )) for 2-3 years. We know there are a few Irish OPVs also, waiting for their crew . In sh...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
...Firstly the RAN has established that more mass is required and that overall tonnage is not necessarily mass. RN must do the same. The RAN have also concluded that Hunter is too expensive and too slow. RN came to that conclusion years ago. Will Canada now follow? The RAN have reorganised their pr...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
More T31 "as is", is what you are saying, I felt. No corvette nor OPV+. Any warship with so-so AAW and "57mm and 40mm" guns and a helicopter hangar is very similar to T31, and introducing new design will not be justified, I think. Why are people obsessed with replacing OPVs that...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I think a 57mm and 2 40mm is over the top on a OPV I think a 57mm and 4 x 12.7mm is a good fit or 2 x 40mm and 4 x 12.7mm I would also like a naval version the Thales Rapid Ranger…. It absolutely is over the top today but what about 10 years from now? The swarms will just get bigger and more comple...

… Those Vard vessels are the basis for the US coast guard heritage class cutter we can argue if they should have camm in any UK vessels. The American vessels are coming in at around $700m dollars per ship and while it will be more expensive to manufacture in the states than here are they really tha...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion
I think this is one way of addressing the needs for MRSS. I do think MRSS shall be split in two classes, 2 larger MRSS (20,000t class) and 3-4 smaller MRSS (8000t class). The latter can be this type of "flat-top LPD with smallish well-dock". Basic parameter - Well-dock for one LCU or 4 CIC...

Re: Archer Class Patrol & Training Vessel (PBR) (RN)
The P2000 replacements do not need to be a single class, what we should consider is what would be their role in a war to support the RN. I see three: - Harbour defence - Portsmouth, Devonport and Faslane need patrol ships, also we should be ready to deploy to places like Cyprus etc as has been done...

I think the latter must be the CIC itself, the longer endurance, higher speed, LCVP replacement.

An apparent candidate is, SEA class 15 boat (15m long and 21t weight) shall be a candidate. https://www.atlas-elektronik.com/fileadmin/user_upload/01_Images/Solutions/Workboats/SEA_Class_15_Officer_Training_Boat_Workboat_Data_Sheet.pdf I understand it can be "adopted" to be an USV, using t...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
• By 2033 RN would have: - 6x T45 - 8x T23ASW/T26 - 2x T31 Patrol - 5x T31 GP with Mk41 - 5x RB2 - 5x OPV+ Not perfect but achievable and a very affordable option massively increasing the likelihood that HMT will agree to fund it. It would also give the politicians plenty of soundbites about “growi...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Moved across. Also as for role that is clear it is global patrol and keeping SLC open the same role the Type 26 GP's were to carry out and the same job the T-23-GP's were doing until they become worn out and were gapped by the RB2's This reasoning only works up to a point. • Forth replaced Clyde so...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
The RN needs Babcock's to keep the schedule they committed to. So far they've done a poor job on that. Poor, but the best we can expect in a company which had never built any frigate in its history. They are doing their best, I think better than I expected. But still it will never meet the schedule...

When will be the T26s and T31s will see IOC? Tricky is the T31's "hand over to RN", which is known to immediately follow the capability improvement period to add CAMM and some sensors/com-suits. 1: It is announced that T26-hull1 will meet IOC on Oct 2028. I understand T26 hull2 will be on ...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]
Mk41 VLS + ExLS is ordered by some navies, but if we want to mount it on T31-hull1, RN will be the first to do all the verification and certification. This will take time. Without certification, RN cannot fire any CAMM from the VLS. And, before it is enabled, no T31 will be sent to front-line and he...

As far as I'm aware the ANZSC upgrade predates the 2x6 mushrooms. Also the Anzac mushrooms fit in the overall compartment for VLS not just the space for 2x Mk41. https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/6/6d/Te_Kaha%27s_Anti-Air_Missile_Armament.jpg/1200px-Te_Kaha%27s_Anti-Air_Missile_A...

"Mk.41 order" The old news on 2018, 4 years ago. only T26B1 Sorry 2018 was 6 years ago of now 2024 (time flies by!!) T26 hull-1 IOC is on Oct 2028, and thus will be delivered to RN on 2026. I do not think T31-hull1 can be 6 years behind this schedule. Note that T26-hull4 (1st T26B2) is pl...
