Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
But the ABCTs are going to lack many of the tools they need to be effective and the Ajax are likely to be used as light armour as much a Recce, such is the lack of fire power in the teams.

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
Everything is still about in year spending, so timescales and total cost seem to be secondary priorities. In the same timescales you could expect to develop a whole new design. Would it be cheaper to just install teh turret form the latest Leopard 2 A7V. May not have the same protection levels but ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
Affordability seems to be the real issue for the British Army. It barely seems to have the funding for its existing programmes, or if it has the funds it doesn't know what to spend them on. It is also dithering on whether to spend money on short, medium or long term programmes, and many programmes a...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion
I do wish people would make the distinction between the Senior Civil Servants and the large numbers of hard working Civil Servants. Blame is due at managerial level not with the "Poor Bloody Infantry"!

Re: RBSL Challenger 3 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
Has anything be released about the total timescale for the Challenger 3 programme and what delivery rate the Army can expect?

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
Yes the M777 is replacing more and more M119s in Infantry and Light Armour Brigades due to its greater range, and there are developments for teh M777 like new ammunition and longer barrels to increase this even further. I agree towed 155mm guns are just as vulnerable to counter battery as their smal...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
The Bofors/BAEs 40mm is a very large gun for its size. One of the key selling points for the CTS was that it, like the 30mm Rarden, is very compact, especially in teh amount of space it actually takes up in the turret. It's ammunition, though expensive, is very powerful, many times that of rival 30m...

The RAF has been doing this sort of thing for years, the Jaguars, due to the role often deployed on exercise in an austere fashion.

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
Mind you with the response times required, the turret would need to be automated so any crew would be redundant and simply make the turret larger, heavier, more complicated and more expensive. I suppose there is a reason Phalanx was not built as a manned turret.

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
The US Army is replacing the majority of its M119s with the M777, precisely because it is outclassed by the opposition as they see it and it lacks the flexibility of ammunition the large weapon has. If the US Army cannot afford or be bothered to develop new rounds for its 105mm M119s it is no wonder...

Re: Royal Artillery/Royal Horse Artillery future developments
Considering the Light Gun is out ranged by nearly every weapon an opposition of any quality would use, we might as well use lighter, more portable 120mm mortars to support our light troops. Yes this to will be out gunned by the opposition but they would be easier to move around, have a far greater v...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicles (British Army)
Well there are option for the cannons that are currently surplus. Nexter has fitted a remote turret to its VBCI in an attempt to win an ongoing contract, equipped with a CTA40 Cannon and two ATGW. It would not take a lot to fit the same turret to a Boxer Mission Module as according to ARTEC such a p...

I would say the planned Deep Strike Recce BCT would be the obvious choice for a Brigade actually stationed in Europe, rather than just having the kit stored there.

Re: The future form of the Army
Well we are looking at 56 Challenger 3s being stored in Germany and at least 18 in Oman for training so that is over half if them allocated leaving the rest to provide enough for training the two UK based Regiments plus ideally have a number in storage to preserve then and allow the fleet to be rota...

Something that would work well with the Royal Artillery planned CAMM Batteries, we only need around three anyway if we allocate one per battery.

Re: French Armed Forces
That has to be funded by very favourable French loans. I did think the F-16 was the front runner with either new build or rebuilt Viper variants on offer.
