Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
How can they find the space retrofit the additional bunks, storage space etc for 100's of additional troops? What is being lost to gain this? There surely wasn't vast amounts of dead space available The simple answer is yes, there are/were quite a few compartments unallocated. Some would be easier ...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)
In simple round numbers, the PAX capacity for each type of ship is: •Ocean - 700 •Albion - 300 •Bay - 400 Some publications also quote higher 'overload' numbers. The whole concept of overload is largely a myth and not used in any military planning. If you 'overload' a ship with extra PAX, they still...

Article in Defense News last week about US Navy searching for a new frigate... The U.S. Navy's requirements for a new guided-missile frigate hit the street Monday with a request for information that blew the competition for the new ship design wide open... ...and that could be anything from the t...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
Continuous Amphibious Readiness. Difficult to get a full Cdo Rgmnt out of the two, on a continuous basis - will that be a Company+ at VH, and other elements rolling onboard if time permits? The requirement is to be able to deploy a 1800 man Commando group with 30 days notice to move (or maybe less)...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
While the carriers might both occasionally be 'at sea' at the same time, it is likely that routine overseas deployments will be scheduled to avoid both carriers being on deployment at the same time. Unless we get to see big exercises of carrier + Lead Commando group, like the old Taurus in 2009. Th...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
It looks like that version has also dropped the second doors on the side of the ship? All the British renders have the davits and mission bay doors as separate. One door starboard because of diesel up/down drafts, 2 doors port. Which is shown nicely in these two recent renditions of the UK Type 26...

The Canadian T26 proposal looks good. Main differences appears to be:
•32 Mk41 cells
•Fixed array radar (not sure of exact details)
•SeaRAM
•Harpoon launchers

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion
The 'story' I was told this week is that due to the fact the propellers had to fitted by divers, there was some problem that wasn't picked up until she was travelling at 20+ kts. This caused damage to the drive shafts which will require dry docking to fix. Normally I don't believe rumours like this,...

Sweden is not a member of NATO and maintains a neutral stance. Selling arms to other countries, and training, appears to be okay - but Belgium was apparently asking for extra assistance which might have violated Sweden's neutrality (officially). (Unofficially) The Gripen rarely competes in the same ...

It is interesting to note what Thales say about their own sonars. •For their UMS 4110 hull mounted sonar they state a typical detection range of 35 km. •For their CAPTAS-4 variable depth sonar, they quote a detection range of up to 150 km. Both of these are fitted to the Italian FREMM frigate. The q...

Well, you said yourself- if it's so cheap and can't hurt, why not put them? Especially because, as you mentioned, anti-torpedo-torpedo is finally coming to existance. Because, even if it is (relatively) cheap, as it is zero% effective it is still a waste of money. Anti-torpedo torpedo system are co...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
Both light weight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles are systems with marginal effectiveness for surface ships. For anti-ship missiles, there is more room for debate. For many years, the doctrine of the USN and the RN (and others) was the best way to defeat another ship was with a submarine launched ...

And it's not trolling to claim that not having torpedos and anti-ship missiles isn't impediment to combat effectivness? If that's so, than I'm proud to be a troll. If we could move this debate to a more rational discussion... Both light weight torpedoes and anti-ship missiles are systems with margi...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
The Sea 5000 future frigate project has a reported budget of $35b aus (£20b) for 9 frigates. The Canadian Surface Combatant project has a reported budget of $60b can (£35b) for 15 ships. This is an interesting High Dawn for two design philosophies, battling it out. On the surface it would seem that...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
If you want an ASW frigate for protecting a carrier group, you will end up with something close in size and cost to a T26 and certainly above the budget for T31. It is possible that T31 could be designed for lower rate ASW requirements such as within littoral environments or maybe even TAPS. But not...

From T26 thread.... I have said everything I wanted to say, just one more thing- isn't it odd to anyone that a single frigate costs like a 1/3 of the new "supercarrier" QE? No objection ;) . T26 shall not have included so many requirements. Could have been built to similar requirem...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
Cost is not likely to be an overriding factor in the Australian or Canadian decisions. All the ships will have been adapted to meet the same national requirements, which means that all the ships will be very similar in size and capabilities. And all the ships will be built in same yards with the sam...

Re: Type 26 Global Combat Ship [News Only]
The Australian and Canadian governments are willing to pay higher costs in order to support and retain a national warship building capability. The T26 design is not in itself massively expensive in comparison to others. If the T26 was built in S Korea or Japan it would be much cheaper. The UK is pay...
