Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

Ron, All jokes aside, whilst I’d say we still hold a lead in fighter design/development over SK or any one in Asia, we (rest of Europe too) really do have to seriously get our fingers out or we will be a way behind the Asian big boys like SK and Japan who are doing a phenomenal job investing in R&am...

Re: South Korea

I have to say I am REALLY impressed by the progress and advance the local industry is getting... some of the "established" shipyards, especially in Europe, should start to worry and invest way more in R&D / Hi xav, bet the jet lag is hitting you pretty hard!! You’ve been all over the ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I don’t understand why everyone is so optimistic about type 31. Yes, were the ideas people here have talked about (off board systems, USVs, UUVs, compact towed sonars and a decent hull sonar etc) to come to fruition they could be useful vessels. The thing is I don’t see any evidence to support any o...

Re: French Armed Forces

Anyway, I agree it is good time for RN to think "upgrading" Artisan or replacing it. Artisan for T31 is good, but not sure it is good for T26. - So, why not GaN? - How about, "double plating" to make the refresh rate doubled, 1 second ? With GaN, it could be lighter with similar...

Re: French Armed Forces

That's not the Aus system, it's French. The Australian system is SEAFAR2 by SEA technologies, but that too may be better than artisan? Sorry, my post wasn’t very well written, but I wasn’t meaning seafire was Australian (the video I was responding to alone said it was French), just that IMO it seem...

Re Blackstone’s post on the bell FARA entry.... RA-66 Comanche with a dash of airwolf! Funny enough though I like it, at least from a looks POV. I always wondered about the Comanche, my understanding was that it’s ‘quarter Back’ to apache’s and others role was taken by UAVs so when its costs continu...

Re: South Korea

I agree cost wise this is not for us now but if others go down this route from a defensive stand point a significant increase in VLS for SAMs would be need across the fleet. I guess China could do but as Jim says above they’ve got a lot of cells on their new ships already and are building them at q...

Re: South Korea

I kind of liked the Arsenal ship concept when the USN were talking about it 20-25 years ago. Since then though they seem to have moved on to SSGNs and in the future using the LUSV as a mobile missile battery. IMO these two are better options. Yes, SSGN are out of our league but some combination of g...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

In missile terms, it sits much closer to ESSM than RIM-116. In software terms it sits closer to PAAMS than ESSM does to Aegis (70% of the code is said to be identical - presumably the 30% is the missile physics package), so is probably more comparable to a short-range SM2 under Aegis. It's a Local ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Simply wrong. Much more capable than a point defence system. As for the rest of your rant, how about waiting until the actual specification is known. I'm pretty sure the RN want a sonar (the upgrade from 2050 to 2150 was pretty cheap) and ASM (interim solution currently waiting for proposals, diffe...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

This is complete nonsense. The parent design, the Iver Huitfeldt, is the Danish equivalent of the Type 45 AAW destroyer. In a 'cool' situation I'm sure a 9000nm range, full aviation facilities with Merlin sized hangar, four large boat bays and 4x TEU mission space are worse capabilities than a B2 R...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Politicians have been selling the Armed Forces down the river so to speak since the end of the World War 2. As soon as a Politician get elected all they are really bothered about is doing whatever is needed to get re elected at the next election and what is in the nation's interest does not appear ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Still not happy myself, these are just a cut in disguise. We should have had 13 type 26s (or 16 ideally) and these should only be looked at after this. They’re not ‘good’ for when things get really hot and don’t bring much to the table in cooler situations that can’t be done with a river type patrol...
