Re: Brexit - The UK's EU Referendum & Withdrawal

Have the Huthis attacked anything not connected to the US/UK by the way? Of the 22 ships attacked so far, 5 were warships (US,UK, France), so I'll leave them out The rest are owned by companies, with shareholders from all over. Ascertaining ownership is difficult and likely to come up with small pe...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

Brilliant use of the RB2s Care to explain why? A lot of effort to visit and island with a population of 47 and a GDP of £100,000. Pitcairn also maintains the toe-hold in the Pacific that allowed us to apply for membership of the trans-pacific trade group, so worth a little more effort than the coup...

Re: The war in Ukraine

Ukraine seems to have been very successful at targetting Russian surface radar covering Crimea in particular. Presumably this forced the Russians to push the airborn radar further forward to cover for that, resulting in today's loss. As I understand it, this may force the Russians to rely on fighter...

I think the original allegation of a "20% reduction in budgets" was later amended to "20% reduction in headcount", which would free up budget for additional spending on policy objectives. I'm not aware of whether a timeframe has been stated. Anyone have any further information?

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

T45s still have DS30Bs with Oerlikon KCB. As I've found out. Apparently the gun is very good, but the mount is a maintenance hog - needed too much time, effort & manhours, so the planned change-over didn't happen. I wonder if that has any bearing on why they weren't fitted to the carriers? The ...

So NATO didn't take over ISAF in Afghanistan at the request of two NATO members, then?
The change to the area that Article 6 applied to was simply approved by a vote of NATO Ambassadors. All NATO members contributed to the ISAF mission, effectively implementing Article 5

It's the only article that allows for concerted action. NATO is at liberty to re-define the area that Article 6 applies to, as it did with Afghanistan

Oerlikon? I thought all the DD and FFs had been upgraded to DS30M, which uses a Bushmaster (longer ranged, as well)

Maybe time to re-think the addition of LMM specifically to handle drones

Only applies to NATO territory north of the tropic of cancer in the Caribbean that is a line slightly north of Cuba. We already know that the first Type 31 has part of its crew and as the RN moves from type 23 to types 26 & 31 the pressure drops as both types need less crew We need to push on now and make the rest of the fleet better so replace the LPD's with one LPH with say 260 crew the RB'2 , MCM and Scott...

Re: The war in Ukraine

I disagree, one wants the enemy to be able to retreat, as without that option the enemy fights harder. Even if it doesn't result in a harder fight, then you have to deal with trapped russian soldiers and civilians. Fair point, but I suspect that it is better to allow the enemy to retreat without it...

Re: The war in Ukraine

Interesting that Ukraine seems to have adopted a strategy of prioritising landing ships as targets over e.g frigates firing cruise missiles. Makes perfect sense I suppose as chipping away at Russia's ability to logistically support its troops at the front will have more of a direct impact at the fr...

I'm pretty sure that there was a comment on that program about getting as many on board as possible for training purposes. I distinctly remember comments about them being short of space - two junior officers were on camp beds in a curtained off section of passageway

I get inert gas for fires but how would flooding be dealt with in such a small crew in damage control situations giving that’s how the navy in peacetime have nearly lost several ships and how would they man the defence watches and air warfare battle staff with a crew of just 50? Likewise, I can see...

They are all built from common components that is why it is called Common Anti-Air Modular Missile. Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

In the future, I would want to see a common ASRAAM & CAMM, maybe even CAMM-ER. One common missile. Add in much bigger production to build up big stocks and used multi-purposely, CAMM will still live with the next generation of missiles that replace aster . I suspect that the different launch re...
