Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Let’s see, but there is zero chance the RN is going to get 6 KDs. The stated aim is 4 to 6 ships, probably half the size of the KDs maybe even smaller. The only thing we know about MRSS is the aim of 4-6 ships and the name nothing else and until the budge is announced we can’t even guess what they ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

If the budget for MRSS is to be £3bn plus… I don’t know what it will be, but I am willing to bet it’s nearer £600mn than £3bn. And if it’s close to the latter then unless the RN budget overall is 5x larger then the bulk of the money should be spent on more T26s/SSNs first. It’ll be no where near £6...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

You have to start with what you want the RM to do on land and indeed in the coastal littoral area, then what they need to support them doing it and how they will move about (dune buggies wont do) and over what distance only then do you know what a ship would look like. Will they follow the US marin...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

We keep going over what should the amphibious replacements be, myself and some others stating we should keep with a smaller number of larger vessels to allow flexibility over their life allowing for change again to the RM, others stating we should go for more numorus smaller vessels and have the RMs...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Spoiler alert they’ve already built the 2 aviation ships! And spent so much on them they won’t be building 4 lpds They are strike carriers, not what was mentioned up thread. what you are saying then is all are aviation capacity should be limited to 2 strike carriers which will either take them away...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

I have no problem with the LPDs having a hanger for a Merlin or two, but let’s not kid ourselves that there is any extra money to do any of this. Flexible ship designs within limits is of course best practice, but the fantasy of multiple large LPDs or LHDs are just that, fantasy. The danger is if t...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

For me the best route is 6 large LPDs with avation facilities for 6 merlin each along with 5-6 Absalon for the T32s. This gives the flexibility to the RM to operate in a multitude of ways, if the RN go down the route of multiple small vessels what they are effectively doing is stating the RM doctrin...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

If your LPDs have hangers for 6 odd merlins like San Antonio or KD then why would you really need a number of Argus style vessels ? Because with a distributed FCF strategy I believe the platforms that they are operating from need to be distributed also. This means more ships, keeping their focus to...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

With us being on the cusp of moving into the world of unmanned surface and subsurface systems a well dock will become more important going fwd not less and no one would know what was is in it. An LHD would not of been trying to be a poor man’s aircraft carrier but a smart man’s ability to control h...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

How many helicopters do people think are need to land a Company of RM, firstly in one drop and secondly in two? These are probably the maximum and minimum number of helicopters a LRG needs for its mission. The reason I bring up needed a decent number helo hanger spaces and spots on the amphibious r...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Johan de Witt & KD they can carry 12 Merlin size helicopters Who needs a LPH if your LPD holds six Merlins or four Chinooks! They are fantastically versatile platforms and 6 KD sized enforcers with generous well docks would go a long way to solving the MRSS conundrum . My only reservation with ...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

2 LPH's and 4 Enforcer LPDs All bases covered with the above. Definitely the way forward if affordable. I agree with that I can’t see it being likely not only due to cost but also due the threats the RN might see the LPHs posing to the QEs, that’s why I’d see 6 San Antonio style vessels being a bet...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

For me it will be about ship to shore connectors we have good landing craft and we can build new faster ones but for me we need a LPH capable of carrying and hangaring 8 Chinooks plus carrying 12 other helicopters on the deck But this limits you to being only able to operate helos of any number fro...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

For me as Iv said before when it comes to the amphibious replacements I’d go for 6 San Antonio style vessel over a small number of larger vessels or a large number of smaller ones. 6 of these could operate together to form to very capable ARGs or on their own for raiding and littoral control ops, th...

What would they do for AEW? I take it they would be a "Surge" part of a typical carrier group with everything they usually have, (Nimitz class and so on) I don't know if I would like to take on China with out it :problem: The first 2 America class were built as LHAs for advanced aviation ...

No type 32 is there on a different line the plan is for 8 X type 26 5 x T-31 up to 5 T-32 3 x SSS new MCM and support ships New MROS and up to 6 MRSS Well that looks good then from all the rumours floating around that the T32s were going to be used as mcm replacements I was worried the so called es...

Is this the T32 or a different expected design ?

If it’s the T32 it’s just another cut dressed up as expanding the fleet but if it’s a new class then great

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

The tier 2s should be made up of 6 T31s and 6 T32s What is a T32? It’s a pipe dream currently? If the budget increases and time is of the essence much better to increase the production rates of T26 and T31 programmes by building as efficiently as possible. I tend to agree but if the T32s are to hap...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

Isn't 3% like 50% more than we currently spend? If it happens this is a political move and a reaction to Russia, we might all agree that any war will result in the 3rd battle of the Atlantic but does the public know that and would putting more money into the navy comfort the public? A political mov...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

£750 million each for T26 Batch II build Only if the number stays at eight. If more funds are allocated in the budget for additional ASW capacity RN will face a dilemma. Plenty of options but no quick fixes: 1. Upgrade T31’s with hull mounted sonar and Captas 2 or 4. 2. Additional batch of P8. 3. A...

Re: Type 31 Frigate (Inspiration Class) [News Only]

At the very least we can expect an extra tranche of funding announced (ca. £20 billion) over the next 4-5 years...but I'd be hoping for something more significant, for example: - Removal of nuclear deterrent from the MoD budget, meaning the MoD gets the full 2% for other commitments - Increased MoD...

It’s only a guess but short term the real change will likely be around a need to maintain forces on the eastern nato border this would like see changes around readiness and spares and possibly UORs and have little to do with ships. Infact unless there much movement around the fabled nato 2% I doubt...

A major war in Central Europe with hundreds of thousands of troops and hardly a ship in sight and the answer is more ships, need a pint of whatever is being consumed here.
