Re: Future RN Amphibious Shipping
Would a lhd operated as a aircraft /troop/heavy/light vehicles carrier also be carrying the Merlin's that would normally operate on the carrier (AEW,ASW) undergoing maintenance ? If the f35b,s and Merlin's are then carried what are the reduced capabilities in troops, vehicles and tank numbers ,What ...

Re: Future RN Amphibious Shipping
If the theory is the carriers are to be rotated one at shore one on duties, why would you then have an lpd built to have aircraft capability ,when you could deploy the second carrier as an accompaniment unless the R.N is engaged in multiple theatre engagements ww3? ,surely its more effective use of ...

Re: Future RN Amphibious Shipping
Would the ski ramp assist the launch of large drones , does the R.N have a view on propulsion pods as used by the Canberra class ,or would it want something more conventional?

Re: Future RN Amphibious Shipping

With the extra abilities of the Canberra class over the Juan Carlos ,would those be needed if as likely to be operated with the carriers ,obviously some savings there

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
Its perhaps unfair to compare proposed ships for the type 31 with the Incheon class ,except these are being also proposed as being able to be exported ,if the Incheon class is cheaper and the available classes better equipped .thats going to be challenging. Theres a problem in that the U.K may no lo...

Re: Future ASW
This might be a useful role for a type 31 that may not be expensive and could contribute to support of carrier operations , and that is the operations of a towed airborne sensor , a proposed model assisted by balloon is claimed to reach well over five thousand feet , this it is claimed could monitor...

Re: Future ASW
For increasing asw capability besides cost what are the arguments against adding an asw capability to the type 45 ,granted without a acoustically quietened hull it would not be as effective a the proposed type 26 ,but on the occasion when away from carrier escort duties could operate effectively in ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
If the issue is the number od ships capable of effective asw then is fitting captas 4 to the type 45 an answer ,more often the type 45 will be required to operate independently than as an escort for the carrier. The type 31 if its only tasked with anti piracy and narcotics intrdiction does not need ...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
If the sea5000 is decided on mature design then the possibility is that the Navantia design based apon the the currently built Hobart class ,is in front of its rivals , the government may also be mindful of cost overuns on incomplete designs, having got their fingers burnt during the Hobart build .

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate
An accoustically silent t26 should provide a better asw capability in the outer ring of a carrier task force than a ship without noise dampening features ,the t26 may also be likely to be a longer ranged vessel than the t31 in accompanying any task force, this would be a consideration in logistics

The Russian Severodvisk class has been complained of by the Russians as to be the most expensive ssk in the world certainly the Virginia is bringing its costs down from under two thousand million U.S ,the later run of Astutes have been claimed as under 680 million pounds , comparing apples and apple...

Re: Future Solid Support Ship
A question perhaps is if the cost of building naval ships overseas are cheaper than the U.K , and the aim of the defense ministry is to make every pound count in delivery of this program, perhaps the funding difference to ensure the ships are built in the U.K is sourced from a different ministry tha...

Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (Future Maritime Patrol Aircraft) (RAF)
Comparing actual build costs is surely different to the actual program cost divide by number of vessels ,you would expect the development costs of a disel submarine to be less than that of a nuclear ,the actual build costs can also be expected to fall in a reasonable production run , the Astute clas...

A big question might be how much of the kitty will be left after bringing the T45 to full capabilities ,would that impact the "design"and numbers of the type31??
