Re: UK Complex Weapons Thread

And a primary, crucial capability is now lost. Beyond embarrasing. The options are literally right there. Do note, this basically confirms that the Type 26 will have no ASMs either until 10 years after it enters service. Let that fact sink in for a moment, hopefully before the ships with no means to...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

It's quite the opposite. Smoothbores have a more direct trajectory because you don't need the spin any more, due to fin-stabilised rounds performing the spin themselves to much more accurate degrees throughout the flight. Rifled guns rely on slip-rings to fire APFSDS rounds, which are not supposed t...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

How are we doing with ammo for the L30. The HESH is well past its sell by date and the DU is not politically correct to use. Did we ever get someone, RM for example to develop a two piece variant of their Tungsten rounds? The very latest long rod penetrators will not fit in the existing CA2 ammo ra...

Re: General UK Defence Discussion

Increase spending spending?

Manpower.
Retaining what already exists for longer.
Keeping existing programs stable without delays, or even speeding them up.

"Extra" is not something we need to think about right now. Stability is the goal.

Re: Donald Trump

As much as a big stink can be made about it, abortion and disabled are not the only issue that makes people choose. It's on those other issues where people lay their priorities. And frankly, the left did themselves no favours in the "support those in need" camp, instead of simply stating f...

Re: Donald Trump

There's no-one in the world saying every one of his policies are nice or good. Voting for him doesn't mean "I agree with everything this man says." It never does for any politician, in any country. People weigh up their options and priorities. A lot of people found that once everything alt...

Re: Donald Trump

Or anyone who voted "No" up here in 2014. The "holier than thou" hatred and vile while making themselves out as the "oppressed good guy" attitude of the left wing is what drove a very liberal, democrat voting friend of mine to swap over to Trump this year. He's an absol...

Re: Brexit - The UK's European Union Referendum

Yet again I find myself in absolute embarrassment for the state of UK newspapers. Not even to do with opinion on the whole issue (I was, aside from the "prevent SNP" side of it) fairly neutral about the entire thing, maybe a slight remain leaning, but ultimately not massively put out eithe...

Re: Air Command to 2030

There is a hell of a lot more to radars than just "range of detection", the advantages of an AESA over a Mechanical are quite literally far too numerous and complicated to type up in one post. Captor-M would still be effective, yes. But it has a bunch of drawbacks that will become particul...

Re: Air Command to 2030

We know the Captor-E won't work in th Tranche 1's, so I do wonder if the Raven ES-01 (A smaller, similar one for the Gripen with 1,200 t/r modules as opposed to 1,500 and the same field of traversable view) would though.

I've actually wanted to see more "personal idea writeup posts" for a while, sometimes even contemplated a forum section for them. Will pass further comment when I'm not just on a work break, but I think I've seen this one before on Think Defence? Or something similar? It's an intriguing re...

Re: Closures

Thanks for the link, GM. It's remarkable how the SNP can make some good points about closing bases and then throw away credibility with the rest of their speech by angling it at Trident instead of the matter at hand about reducing base numbers.

If they really did go the whole hog, then it would be quite transformational. Here's a general list of all the proposed upgrades we've seen thus far or have seen via the 2E before: Lethality: - 120mm Rheinmetall L55 Smoothbore Gun, likely with DM63 APFSDS - Upgraded FCS - Commander's Independant The...

They were steadily losing popularity until the Brexit thing. Say what either side will about advantages or disadvantages of either, but it's given the SNP a massive popularity boost up here. Seeing "Yes2" everywhere when I walk to work. It's that sort of thing that makes me worry for the f...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

It is a sad thing to see, even in jokes, and a great worry for the future of the country. However, it must be said that Scotland kind of pulled it on its own head. When constantly muttering about leaving, eventually you are bound to be told to go by the other guys when they begin to get annoyed. Th...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Let's sell Scotland to the EU, then we'll have some cash for more ships and crew. I'm aware it's a quick joke, but this type of talk that I've seen around sites of "Just cut off Scotland and lets live better!" is perhaps the biggest, most dangerous attitude I've seen growing in ...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

Tank crews are, surprisingly, not often the best sources of information on vehicle performance. There's an inherant "I know my own thing." factor, there always is. The "losses" of the Abrams in Iraq was twofold to explain aind very simple. 1 - Abrams saw far more combat hours tha...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

Would the whole Leclerc turret fit on the CA2 chassis? I believe the Leclerc stores most of its ammo in the rear of the turret so ammunition would not be a issue. Unfortunately, the Leclerc only stores 22 rounds in its turret. The remaining 18 are stored beside the driver, so there's no space in th...

You're probably thinking of the Vickers Mk7, I believe. Leopard 2 chassis, unique "universal" turret from the UK.

http://www.military-today.com/tanks/vickers_mk7.htm

Could use the L30A1, Rheinmetall 120mm or even the GIAT 120 (from the Leclerc).

The one thing I don't "get" there. It's gotall these sonars, but absolutely nothing outside of a slowly launched helicopter to attack submarines with. No Stingrays or ASROC? There's little point without them if it requires an "escort for the escort".
