Re: Defence Spending

Well I was eagerly waiting for him to spell out where all the extra cash was coming from. So that's two and a half minutes of my life I'll never get back. And why 6%? Why not 5 or 7? Actually I've never liked this 2% of GDP target as it doesn't really mean anything. We should spend what we think we...

Well I can send one, but my MP is SNP so the response will likely be the same as every time I've messaged them, that "We will cut Trident to pay for the forces".

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

There's nothing stopping it mounting a pod like anything else.

The internal one is still a big leap in that every one of them has one equipped out the gate and without using external hardpoints to do so. It's something over nothing.

I've seen that design floating around a lot.

It's astonishing in a way. An "escort" that is spiraling to sizes we've not seen since the Kirov class.

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

From speaking to some folks much more in with tank tech from the East than I am, the consensus seems to be that the Karrar is mostly a visual upgrade than an actual combative one. Many of its elements are just older T-72 components masquerading as a T-90MS without the same upgrades to actually be so.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

Bear in mind that the exact numbers are enormously more complex for what can operate at what speed. How many fuel stations, ammo elevators, personnel. That affects tonnage too, the Nimitz/Ford are much heavier, but they also need a lot of space for a LOT more crew too. It's hard to make a direct com...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

To be honest, I doubt the 70 F-35B claim. The Hanger can handle what, 24? 27 as a push? I've stood in that hanger, I can get a brief thought on its size. It's enormous, but planes are also big. I've seen an image before that put the max F-35B amount at about 55+ if they went all out on F-35Bs for th...

Re: Boeing P-8A Poseidon (Future Maritime Patrol Aircraft) (RAF)

It's a blessing and a curse all at once really. Makes it ever more clear that Stingray is on the way out. Not on T45, likely not on T26, not on T31 most likely, not on P-8. Wildcat and Merlin will be the only ones using it. However this DOES indicate more confidence that Harpoon might be on it, if i...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

There's a potential intelligence trick in there having a "fake F-35" model, if you could make those mock ups cheaply. Throw em around airfields at random, use them for persistent training to get moving around. Confuse the hell out of opposing intelligence. Especially so as an F-35 moving a...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

I am someone who is cautious of any new bit of kit. F-35 especially so (most of my concerns from the RAF/FAA's utterly pitiful munitions range set for it that refuses to take use of its full value) for some reasons. Mostly involving export price, cost of future upgrades, weight of numbers to those o...

Low detectibility, on par with F-117 (note the "F" in there) Reasonably weapon loadout, on par with the Hornet ( a work horse for everything) Acceleration on par with F-16, just to make sure that the emphasis stays on BVR and it will be the missiles that do the turning - without a man in ...

Re: F-35B Lightning II (RN & RAF)

The real test of F-35 will be against PAK FA and J-20/31, not against legacy fighters. ;) Not quite the point I meant. The claim was that F-35 is a light bomber, not a fighter. It is a fighter, it's proven its a fighter. It was designed as a fighter, and it's better than the fighters its replacing,...

Don't need that gun. Despite its "F" designation, the F-35 is not a fighter, it's a light bomber. The"F" is there purely for pilot ego, to make them feel like real fighter pilots. ;) I find it intriguing that this was proven comprehensively wrong and still gets stated. Please se...
