Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Those in charge of the requirements for the Global Combat Ship aka T26 probably got the pricing and the specification right. £700m for this sort of specification sounds about right. Where the money has been wasted (just like with the carriers) is in the politics of the process. The QE class lost ou...

http://i63.tinypic.com/2nbetts.png Repulse-san, sorry for late response. I think the concept is worth considering, but "how to make it silent", "to what extend it must be silent" is both not clear, I'm afraid. Worth discussing. 1: Another comment I have is, the River B2's freebo...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

Addition. Sorry, this is Fantasy thread, and anyway my comment is only MY personal comment, I agree. The only point I want to stress is that, if we "find" a way to make a T31e very cheap, the calculation logic MUST be able to explain the FTI and T26's high cost at the same time. For examp...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

It does make me wonder that with the fact the 15,000tn RRS has been built to that standard for just £150m and the odd confidence Babcock has that they can deliver the Arroehead 120 as show for the £250m, is it that over the years we've become just use to the idea of having to pay £1bn odd so have c...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

I said "hull quietization will be expensive", actually two aspects. 1: The quietization itself must be expensive. Comparison with RRS cost is a good point, and I really do not know why. But, I can see - vibration dumping and shock tolerance are BOTH related to mechanical holding structure...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

Even better the polar ship is being built for £150m, its the entire programme that costs £200m. That's 15,000 tonnes of hard ass polar standards, including resilient mounted hybrid diesel electric propulsion to improve sonar performance. That sounds very good value compared to what we're use to in ...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

Polar research ships don't need military grade C&C, sensor and weapon systems I get that but what's the rough price difference in polar standard 5 hull and naval standard hull, same with the quietening for the RRS and what's needed for a second tier so so quiet ASW vessel ? If there is no big p...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

"serious hull quietization will cost A LOT lot lot." 1. Would it I don't know, but it might be possible, the one off, so all design costs included, £200M 15,000T RRS Sir David Attenborough being built by Cammell Laird is designed to stringent requirements for very low levels of underwater...

Re: Fantasy T31 and Fantasy Fleet Builder [New]

@Jake1992 What role is the T31 currently designed to do, as far as can see from RFI its a show the flag and may be chase pirates, serious warfighting capability is minimal. If that is all an ASW version could stand in, all the T31 brings to the table is the Wildcat with Sea Venom with a small warhe...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

To my understanding, ExLS is "ALSO" capable of "stand alone". So, if you are to install ExLS into Mk.41 VLS, actually you do not need Mk.41 VLS at all. To retrofit CAMM to a ship with Mk.41 VLS, ExLS may be good. # Note, RNZN ANZAC-mod was said to use Mk.41 VLS but they are not....

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

Scrapping four and getting two has been done many times in the past in all three services. Look how many Jaguar and Tornado F3 squadrons were replaced by just five Typhoon units (sorry seven) and so on. Unfortunately unless the Defence Secretary can head off all the cuts being investigated, and act...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

From what I can gather from your proposal it all depends on having all 5 T31s all 3 LSD and both carriers avalible at the same time. How often will that happen 5-10% of the time. Which is a Hell of a lot more than the time we will spend doing amphibious ops. We need more than 5 T31es. I think you'v...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

Currently no the T31e specification does not contain the need for deploying LCVPs, but the fact that the B1 Rivers could, then I believe a design can be found to do so, especially as unmanned MCM craft have been pictured in some designs already. For me, the approach I lay out is the best for the RN...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

I can easily see: - 1st wave delivered by forward based T31s (with LCVPs / CB90s) and OTH fast landing craft - 2nd wave via helicopters - 3rd wave delivered by LCUs from LSDs and combined with them sailing in once a landing place is secured by the initial assault. 5 T31s with 60 RMs each and 4 LCAC...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

This is one reason why Iv always thought we need a amphibious force consisting of 2 large LHDs, 2 large LPDs and 3-4 LSDs ( modern bays ) essentialy giving us a similar set to the US but on a smaller scale. Just a question. Why do you need a well-dock in your flat top? In other words, why not HMS O...

I do agree with your post, and I always appreciate your figures you look into and bring up, however the one quoted line is one I don't entirely agree with. I feel it assumes that the opposing force has permanent anti-ship defences on every part of the entire coastal area 24/7 that can see every sin...

Re: Albion Class Amphibious Assault Ships (LPD) (RN)

I do wonder, why do we class the carriers as being to valuable to risk close to the shore, but not an LPD/LPH? Surely loosing either is an unacceptable loss? Militarily yes the lose of either is really bad but from a political stand point the lose of a super carrier one of only two is just unaccept...

I really like the idea of it being put in to law that the defence spending should be 3% of GDP minimum. If it can be done for aid why not defence sounds good in theory, but how do you define the act of what should come out of that 3% Ideally I'd like it to be the same definition of what defence spe...

True but it's still a 50% increas that equates to £18bn a year extra. If kept at that for the duration of the T31 and T26 projects the Royal Navy could massively expand
