Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
and France went further with reducing the Rafale's RCS than the Typhoon ever did. Your post is mostly correct, except for this. Typhoon has broadly been seen to have a lower RCS than Rafale, due to having a full composite frontal aspect (Rafale's entire engine inlets are non-RAM metal), recessed mi...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
I'm not expert by a long shot (stand in line) but I was of the thinking that RM's long 120mm with existing US Depleted Uranium darts would be superior at splashing tanks to any 120mm or 130mm gun with Tungsten rods which is all the German army can have by law. There isn't a colossal difference betw...

It is a Challenger.
Basically, one site said Leo, and all the sites who just reprinted from that one copied. It's usually the case.
Shows how little research most "journalism" does.

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)
Carter probably just meant "projectile". Remember that "missile" refers to that sort of thing in certain branches of English too.
Odds are 9/10 he probably just meant a normal FIN round. Given it's L55A1 that likely refers more to (so called) DM73.

And yet another sham, of yet another critical bit of capability being removed without a replacement ready to take over from Day 0.
First RAPTOR, now Sentinel.
Armed Forces are going to end up blind.

Bearing in mind I generally supported more T26 in place of T31, but there is one flaw to the argument of "Cancel T31, go all in on T26", and that is ship hull numbers in the short term. Even if you went all on T26 today, you would run into a problem of the T23s starting to retire without a...

Hi... new contributor, so please go easy on me please?! Re. RAF Eurofighter Typhoon; during this lockdown, I'm just watching a Forces TV documentary about the aircraft. Filmed in 2018, it shows aircraft in both Lossiemouth & Romania. What intrigues me is that the video imaging of the aircraft, ...

Re: The future form of the Army
I suppose there are two trains of thought on that subject, either as said you used a faster firing weapon or one with a programable sensor fused round fired in a short burst as would be done by a CTS40 configured for such work and is what I have proposed for the LAAD platoon within the Boxer equipp...

these turning up in numbers put an end to using 23 mm AA guns against ground targets - until then the practice was to have 2 HE for each armour piercing round in the feed sequence so whether the folks in the OpFor APC dismounted or not... job done any) way A more general topic is that as there migh...

Re: The future form of the Army
The '40mm' bit mentioned about Starstreak only refers to their explosive impact on an aerial target following a hit (in addition to the energy the kinetic impact will impart). The bursting charge is fused to explode inside the penetrated space. But it is also a Tungsten dart, designed to penetrate ...

Re: The future form of the Army
The '40mm' bit refers to the size of the bursting charge inside each dart which is roughly the same size as the one carried in a 40mm Bofors shell. Remember the Starstreak Darts explode and fragment once penetrating an aircraft (or armoured vehicles) skin. Bofors APFSDS do not have any internal cha...

Re: The future form of the Army
Worth noting that while Starstreak can target ground units, it will struggle to really deal damage to things any heavier than maybe 30mm resistant. Each dart is said to have "40mm round" type impact. Given the date of that statement, 40mm APFSDS rounds then, and how Starstreak's darts aren...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)
There was no direct clean line of replacement. What was Snatch and WMIK became Foxhound, Jackal, Coyote, Mastiff, Ridgeback, Wolfhound, Husky, Panther, Vector etc etc. And it all came at different times to each other gradually, serving alongside, some done faster etc. But in role, the Foxhound does ...

I must have been reading the wrong news: Jackals of which we have plenty were not mine protected enough (while otherwise v good) - hence we had to have Foxhounds ... plenty pronto (which, just like Jackals are fairly open, which is not the way to maximise ballistic protection) Which part of this di...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)
The US is not 'years ahead'. They just have a blank cheque, whereas we don't. The UK could easily built a 'Tempest' (or whatever this fictional plane would be called) on its own if it had the same advantages of the US military budget. Very inaccurate. It's not simply a question of money. It's a que...

Re: Jackal and Coyote MWMIK (Army)
As I understood it, Panthers, Huskeys & Foxhounds were all meant to replace Land Rovers.. These things were a UOR purchase for desert conditions in Afghanistan, they are completely unsuited to the Northern European climate. Jackals replaced the WMIK. Foxhounds etc replaced the Snatch. Jackals/C...
