Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
Its the governments rules, the aid budget cant buy military equipment. Cant start robbing other budgets....or shall we buy some C-17 on the NHS budget because they're used for medevac? So HMG made to rule so they can change it. We're not talking about robbing other departments were talking about a ...

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
A ship operated by the MOD is military equipment no matter what paint scheme you give it. It doesn't have to be operated by the mod I said it could be manned by RFA and civis as an option there are other ways And how decides that the aid budget can't contrabute in such sercumstances ? You have to t...

Re: RFA Argus (Casualty Receiving Ship / Aviation Training Ship) (RFA)
The best option in my eye would be to build 2 dedicated hospital ships based on the SSS hull design payed for out of the aid budget. A large hull with a twin Merlin flight deck and triple merlins hanger, a stern ramp to load and off load LCVP size vessels with plenty of space for very large medical ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
No what the RN wants is 5 proper frigates not 5 coverts which in effect it will be getting. Do you really think the RN would look at it and say yes 5 Leander covers will be more useful to us than 5 Absalon style vessel, I very much doubt that. Cuts to big ticket iteams are normal taken by politians...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I'd love to have 5 Absalon type vessels as the T31s and believe it's give greatest flexiblity and bang for buck, but I think the main reason the RN hasn't gone this way is because the fear it's risk the Albions being cut big time This is rubbish. The reason the bids have not gone this way is becaus...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
I think the T26 with its large flight deck and mission bay is probably better equipped for the future than any other escort vessel out there. But I do wonder if we'll be looking at the BAe UXV Combatant in 15 years time and wondering if that was a better concept overall, not I might add for the ski...

Re: Astute Class Attack Submarine (SSN) (RN)
Why would Barrow revert to building Astute's after the Dreadnoughts? It will be a 40 year old design by then, with a reactor well out of production, and the PWR-3 wont fit. Better off building a Dreadnought lite with the Virginia payload module instead of Trident. I thought the new launchers on the...

Germany getting rid of 33, what have we got? 160 minus 107 (minus 1 destroyed on landing, in the US)? - enough to do a throrough inspection and reject a few (for spares, at a "kilo" price) I was avoiding Germany like the plague....thinking of the Italians who have some T1's.... UK, Italy,...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion
back to my mantra the T26 is too costly and class should be terminated after the first three ships. Ok, so if T26 at 700-800 mil. is too expensive and T31 at 250 mil. is too cheap (not capable enough), what could we get for say 500 mil. pounds? What capabilities? We revert to the original plan whic...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
My concern is the numbers, to do MCM, survay work, patrol and costal ASW a good amount will be needed. Most of tasks have no imperative for being contemporaneous => modularity is "the" answer Yes the kit is modular but the vessels to carry those kits will need to be avalible, this is why ...

Re: Mine countermeasures and Hydrographic capability (MHC) (MHPC)
I for one can't see how the patrol part can be left out as all of the MCM and the Echo class have a patrol role second to there main role always have had . I would still like to see a Venari-95/100 with a wildcat capable hangar and a 20 knot top speed. as i said in the past we need to take this opp...

Well this probably reduces the likelihood of Turkish involvement in project Tempest, or at very least the powerplant: https://www.defensenews.com/industry/2018/10/31/general-electric-beats-rolls-royce-to-power-turkeys-indigenous-fighter-jet/?utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=Socialflow+DFN&utm...

Iv heard rumours that the future spear 3 will have a naval version with the possibility of it being quad packable in mk41
Could this combined with say LRASM ( then future Anglo French ASM ) make a very could base point for the T26 and other T class vessels.

I'd like to see 1 seaRAM and 1 phalanx system plus 2 30mm ( for now ) with maybe them replaced by the ct40 derivative to have comonality with the army.
I believe this would be surficent for RFA vessels.

I wonder if they will revisit that larger four rotor twin wing thingy seen in a few movies, as a future Chinook or even partial C-130 replacement. That would be very interesting and could be a very useful addition for land forces, the only down side with it is that no flat top or other vessel could...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
the 2 offerings at the moment don't really compete with what's on offer in the FTI PPA and potentialy the FFGX No - they are aimed at a different market This is where like others have said we should use the investment on the T26 design and put more in to use the basics from the T26 ( hull form, sup...

One thing I am surprised at with the v-280 family is that I havnt seen them come forward with a larger design to compet with the v-22 as a next gen. Iv seen they are developing the v-254 UAV which has a lot of potential but the size of the v-280 limits it from certain roles that at the moment only v...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]
Many other systems and components will be UK sourced. So overall, a good thing and certainly good for national prestige, but not as beneficial as some seem to think (and arguably, only of indirect benefit to the RN). Personally I would argue that now is precisely the right time to offer a lower-pri...
