Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

That seems to be the universal feeling, that "Oh, that's good! But...this and this..but it has this good bit too!" Frankly, outside of the AMV, I can't think of any selection that wouldn't have felt like that in some way. At least it's not the VBCI, I've absolutely no time for giving contr...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

That money is lost, and buying Boxer now makes it twice as painful. I wouldn't touch Boxer with a long stick, if i were in the army. Money was lost no matter who we picked, so it's the same pain on whichever selection. I do recall saying years ago that not going with Boxer the whole time was one of...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

It's a fair point of concern about the current tone from Germany. Aside from that, Boxer is a very solid choice. One of, if not the best 8x8 in the world, with enormous modularity and something the UK has previously paid into anyway. My money had been on for AMV due to that already prototyped CT40 W...

Re: Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (Army)

Most tanks store ready in the turret bustle.

The trick is whether you can get blowout panels and sealed doors in there.

Re: UK Complex Weapons Thread

I certainly am not too keen on the Exocet. Can't be carried internally, and it's so large and clunky that even the Rafale can only carry a single missile per plane. In that case it quite literally is "only one shot to take." F-35's can easily fit 8 Spear3 inside their internal bays. Slight...

Re: French Armed Forces

For France, there isn't a 5th gen program. Germany has some insane aspiration to do another joint EU one. Good luck on that without the UK or France. It's been a worry to me about them "skipping" a generation, the UK has had enough self 5th gen prospects and F-35 integration that its maint...

Landing craft carrying sonars?

That is actually pretty genius, amphibious ships deploying groups of sonar equipped ships to saturate an area...I like it.

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

It's generally accepted by those who have measured the layouts and design compared to other carriers that the QE could probably fit around 45-50 F-35 on top of a smattering of helos if they really went for a full house. Kyd likely meant double as in double of the "24" standard load, rather...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Thats around 16 knots, so almoist certainly, yes. It's not such a big issue, as something as large as a ship in such a featureless zone is easy to track for the missile, and while it could move at more than 16 knots, the missile would have to moving literally perpendicularly for that to really matte...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I believe CAMM's "anti-surface" option is less of a fully developed "mode" and more like SM-6 or Sea Dart. The missile will simply respond to what its told to attack, and the minimum height is low enough that it can include surface targets. After all, most sea-skimmers fly lower ...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

One of the Bofors' drawbacks is that its ammunition is absolutely enormous, restricting ammunition capacity. Good reason to want something else to not require them to be used on every engagement. Also the usual RWS stuff, easier engagement, separate engagement, doubling up suppression...all sorts. B...

Re: AS-90 Self-Propelled Gun (Army)

Generally the answer is the vast majority factor. 105mm's are not going to be effective against MBTs. Then again, neither are 155mm's really. At least not on splash. On direct impact, both 105 and 155, be it from an L118 or the AS-90 (thread topic!) would absolutely annihilate any tank in the world....

Re: AS-90 Self-Propelled Gun (Army)

The question is, you keep saying "against armour".

What kind of armour? Modern MBTs? Medium weight IFVs? Basic APCs?

What is the scope of your question to measure 105mm against?

This question is as broad as "Bullet resistant" between 9mm and 14.5mm.

Re: Typhoon

As a note, the latest release about Belgium contains that the Typhoon can carry "over 9,000kg of weapons". Direct from BAE. Real limits starting to be revealed to push sales? Rafale having 9,500kg was always one of its big draws over the Typhoons previous reveal of 7,500kg. Seems the Tiffy...

Re: BAE Systems plc

There's really not a huge difference in pricing between the Rafale and the Typhoon. Enough that it's more about anciliary aspects that define their individual pricings. For example, if Belgium wants to stick with AMRAAM and Sidewinder, well, Typhoon has that covered, while they'd have to pay integra...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

It's well worth remembering the QE and MARS angles there. The MoD patently has a certain trust in BMT's designs to have offered such critical projects to them in the past. I do wonder if BAE will go public with some statements on what the Cutlass and Avenger have by comparison. Thus far it just look...
