Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

We should not kid our self that US is not pocking the nest hoping something will happen at will let them have pop. I think that's beyond doubt. People seem to be on "Blame Iran!" or "Blame America!" In truth, I blame both of them. Bravo zulu on Montrose having the discipline not...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

An interesting point - the IRG seem to have been unaware of the presence of HMS Montrose until she intervened (hence the rant yesterday from some Iranian bigwig about the British being "cowards" because we protected our own shipping, which I thought was odd when it was reported. The fact ...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

As much as I don't want to see Scotland go if they did I think a fleet of 1 x Albion 2 x T-31 3 x River B1s 3 x Hunt class 5 x Archer 1 x Point class would be a good match this could allow the RN to build a sixth Type 31 what are we losing 1 Albion we are not using 3 x B1 Rivers that will go anyway...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Folks genuine question here, from someone who appreciates but doesn't really know armoured vehicles. With all the talk about Challenger 2 updates or potential replacements, why is the Israeli Merkava never proposed? It's obviously a very formidable and modern MBT, with the latest active protection....

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Apparently the British Army, who own the vehicle, disagree. The British Army don't own any yet ;) The men of the British Army I spoke to face to face who drove the vehicle itself in, who've been working as its crew for a few months, make a pretty convincing point that yes, they do know their own ve...

Re: Royal Marines boats

I would normally agree with home build home design but with something so small and inexpensive is there any point in times of short funding ? I wouldn’t use them to march in to Iran but to protect ports like Clyde, Portsmouth, Gib, Cyprus, the gulf and Far East 1 or 2 at each along with them to be ...

Re: Royal Marines boats

It would be foolish to not simply just get a home borne design. They're not expensive, and the Archer hardly needs anything fancy to replace it, given its role. Nor is a replacement needed urgently. They can continue to run. The idea of marching them up into Iran is just nonsense. A decent patrol bo...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Ever since the Barnett Formula was implemented, they would have already been more than recompensed. The additional costs, to the remainder of the U.K., of relocating both the Submarine Base and other Defence facilities would also need to be paid for. They would not be entitled to much, if anything ...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

ARES is definitely 4+2. With 3 PAX on the side and 1 PAX taking the Tac Cmdr position. Well, the Army who uses it says 7 and explicitly state that it's 7 on the current version they have, and 3-4 on a separate version in the family. There is strictly, 100%, not a 7 PAX version in the AJAX family fo...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Well they have got the Shipyards, let her build her own Navy. I wonder how popular she will be in her home city when there are No ships being built and No possibility of them being built either. In fairness to them, they do have a claim on vessels, since they paid for them as well via tax...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The SNPs White Paper called for: https://www2.gov.scot/resource/0043/00439021.pdf - Two frigates from the Royal Navy’s current fleet - A command platform for naval operations and development of specialist marine capabilities (from the Royal Navy’s current fleet, following adaptation) - Four mine cou...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

The WARRIOR pre-upgrade has 3 2-man benches and a single small seat which, as far as i know, is right on top of the CBRN toilet. In practice the Army seems to have set the armoured infantry section at 6, and that seems reasonable. Can imagine it is a rather tight fit already. Interesting about ARES...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Lets say the Scottish leave there will be a need for them to form a Navy of sorts for me this would take the form of 3 x River B2's and two T-31's fitted with CAPTAS-2 plus Bulwark. this way the rest of the UK would take the first 3 T-31's and the Scotts would end up with a useful fleet as there on...

Re: Future UK Combat Aircraft (Project Tempest)

No disagreement there. But I don't believe we should consider watering anything down about the result. Tempest has direct competitors already forming aimed at high end stuff themselves. The aim should be on surpassing that to succeed.

shark bait wrote:I'm holding out for a 90% F-22 from Tempest.

If Tempest wants to be viable as a high end superiority fighter it's going to have to be a lot more than that. F-22 is older and less advanced than a lot of people think.

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

If you got into an FV520 you can finally answer on the number of seats. Is it 6 or 7, now? Unless one was hidden behind the...let's just say the rather "ample sized" man sitting near the turret basket one my turn in, I saw six seats. However both their board and the rep informed me that i...

Re: FV4034 Challenger 2 Main Battle Tank (British Army)

Got the chance to be up close with one, and stand up on the turret to look down into one at Tankfest (also saw Ares and Warrior 2, both look pretty impressive, got inside the troop compartment of the latter). Quite a thing. Reminds you of the psychological shock of such massive vehicles to see movin...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

The MoD in no sensible way could commit to building them up here during that period. Why not? I think it gave the MOD a convenient excuse to do things on the cheap. Complex warships can only be built in the UK. Awarding a contract to the Clyde, only for the Clyde to suddenly become not in the UK wo...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

But, MOD decided the delay two times: first time for the 3 River B2s, and secondly for the 2 more. When the "2 more" are ordered, political situation was basically already settled down? So I think the T26 design was really not ready yet . My apologies, Donald, but unless I'm greatly mista...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

I personally think RN fleet size is over-sized compared to their budget. There are many "hollow" assets all around the UK military. For me, "19 escorts saga" is just doing bad than any good to RN. If "16 escort" is to be the aim, RN should have had ordered 10 T26, and ...

Re: Type 26 Frigate (City Class) (RN) [News Only]

People talk of the US missing the boat here. They're not.

It's the UK who missed it. By the government delaying so much about just funding the damn thing. We could have had one in the water already.

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)

Iv always thought an Ajax based IFV made more sense over all, yes would of cost more up front but would reduce through life and training costs as well as giving us a more modern platform. Iv said it over and over but IMO the enter medium armour fleet should be replaced with solely Boxer and Ajax ba...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (British Army)

Sounds more like a murmur between officials to look at other options as a possible alternative.

The above can easily be interpreted by a newspaper as ARMY LOOKING TO NOT DO IT ANY MORE.
