Re: Hunt Class Mine Countermeasures Vessel (MCMV) (RN)

IMO if the choice is between Hunt and Sandown, I would keep the Hunt's. ;)

Re: Future Light Frigate

It is true we will need an interim missile between harpoon and our new future missile. Naval Strike Missile and Tomahawk Block 4 are both great choices because of their multiple uses, very important suff these days. IMHO way too logical proposal for British sea lords and MoD mandarins... Far better...

Re: Future Light Frigate

Well, it all comes down to this point: If you don't like the "light frigate" concept, are you ready to accept RN with 8 or 10 Type 26? ;)

Re: Future Light Frigate

So, what can we drop from Type 26 ( keeping the basicly same hull and propulsion ) to get cheaper frigates? Tomahawks? So, no 16 Tomahawks, that's 2 Mk41 launchers less ( 2 x 20 mil. USD- 40 mil. USD and 16 x 2 mil. USD ( for TLAM )- about 30-40 mil. USD. That's 70-80 mil. USD. Or, about 10% of the ...

Better to name it OPV then...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

I would say that when the UK has 13 frigates ( maybe, for now 8 is for sure ) and the bloody Denmark ( 13-14 x smaller country ) has 5, something is pretty rotten in the state of Britain... Found a list of frigates worldwide: http://www.globalfirepower.com/navy-frigates.asp Even better link: https:...

Re: Future Light Frigate

Yes what happens when the 2nd rate Frigate has to be bounced into a conflict because there are no other vessels available or its lower threat patrol area throws up a high threat at short notice. A light frigate available in theatre, armed with Sea Ceptor, a Wildcat helo and a 127mm gun with PG ammo...

Re: Future Light Frigate

To be honest, I can't really see how a new design is going to be much cheaper than taking a T-26 hull, swapping the CODLAG system for a CODLOG, squeezing the MK41 VLS down to maybe 16 cells, not bothering with torpedo capability and using the T-23's 4.5 inch gun. These would effectively be the GP T...

Re: UK's Future T26 Frigate.

No, i want to hear a more relevant comparison. I want to hear what kind of amazing survivability feature Type 26 supposedly would have over and above what the FREMM have, while being only a few meters larger, but with far more space taken up by weapons, Chinook-flight deck and mission bay, stores f...

Absalon would not do the trick, it's a foreign design. We can't export other countries designs.

Well it isn't that foreign customers are buying British frigates anyway, at least not since Leander-class... :)

Re: Future Light Frigate

WhitestElephant Well, IMHO a beefed-up Khareef should be just fine. Add say 1000 tons ( so about 3500 t+ ), put 127 mm gun instead of 76 mm, keep the rest of weapons same ( CAMM instead of MICA ) and add a longer range ( 6-7 000 nm ) and you have more than decent ship for 90% of needs. And the price...

Re: Future Light Frigate

I agree. But when MoD in their infinite wisdom decided thatlarger ships like Type 45 should have no TLAMs, they had to go somewhere, so we have what we have. I still think thatType 26 is a good project, but damn too costly... But, IMO additional 5-6 Absalon-type frigates would be a great thing, even...

Re: Future Light Frigate

Speaking of light/cheap frigates, maybe you should order them from Denmark:

Not exactly light, but cheap- definitly... And general-purpose as hell...

It seems to me that I saw somewhere that UK had 79 old, non-modernised launchers?
