Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

Yep. Especially because there most probably will be no future growth whatsoever, at least based on last 20 years of history of the RN. Just the opposite, future shrinking is more likely. Cynicism is all very well, but the reality is that most RN ships are continually upgraded over their lifetime. W...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Could UK get the same "special deal" with the BAE pleeeease? Maybe if we commit to a 10-12 order for the RN + 2 RNZN we might get a better deal... BAE is a business after all ... Yep, so the BAE will NOT fund discount for New Zealand. UK may do that, but I think that HMG has bette...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Only exception will be RNZN, which has no ship-building industry (they lost), and still looking for two frigates. But, only one candidate. And it is only a candidat A better move would be to give RNZN a special financial deal on 2 T26s, forward base another RN T26 there and jointly man - this would...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

And, can you please explain to me what the **** have Tsushima or modern Russian Navy with the Typhoon's or lack of anti-surface capability of the RAF or RN ships in the future when Harpoon is retired? After all, I really don't see that I have said something much different from your own view. And can...

the RN currently has 6 SSNs Tshusima ended with a 'perfect T'* so you need to count them as well, not just the Astutes :D ===== *copyright by some fellow called Nelson  Ok, so a few Trafalgar Claas too ... It's still 6 boats... I was trying to upgrade and compliment you, but no, impossible...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

ttle use training to use a weapon that you have no plans to buy. Amidst all the loss of capability over the years thats one thing we forget, is there any martitime strike experience left in the RAF (or FAA for that matter)? It was build up over years with Buccaneer, then Tornado, but has been gone ...

Re: Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers - News and Discussion

I do not think even the Carriers have good Command capabilities, wasn't that one of the things removed to save a few pennies? WE know the RN wanted to move forward with CEC, but could not get any such programme funded as it was seen as "Nice to have" rather then essential back when these ...

Now whether the Swedish Air Force decided in the 1990s that the threat from the Soviet Baltic Fleet had gone away and so they no linger the train with the weapon I do not know, but they still have them in storage and as I mentioned above are looking at introducing an improved version in a few years...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

NATO is not far form being broken and this adds further confusions to things. The military command structures have at nearly all level been made subservient to Politicians from the various member states greatly reducing the alliance's effectiveness. Decision at almost every level now require politi...

Re: F-35B Lightning (RAF & RN)

If we cannot be bothered to publicise our own critical achievements in a timely fashion, someone may feel justified in thinking that we are behind in other things as well. Undermanned, Under-equipped, Underfunded. Perhaps Unready! I note that the MOD did not even claim that IOC (Land) had been achi...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

About Spear 3, are they integrated on F-35B? Because they are on that picture, in front of the F-35B. Same thing with Meteor, not integrated, because they will use AIM-120D.

But, I also think that buying 3-4 more 42m BF cutter is needed. Another idea will be to buy (or lease) 2 (or even all 4) RNZN Protector-class inshore patrol boat, which is for sale. (56m long, 340t, 25 knots, with 20 Navy crew + additional 12 if needed.) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Protector ... ...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

Well Typhoon will give them that, especially if the Spanish follow the development path for the platform. The F-16 is really at the end of its evolution whereas the Typhoon is in reality still at the beginning. Not quite sure. I mean, OK, Typhoon has certain advantages over F-16, but when we put AE...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

They only bought that number of AV-8As and AV-8Bs in the past, and with funding tight I cannot see them change their attitude to carrier jet numbers that are procured. They might however join up with Italy for deep maintenance capabilities. Yep, but ther's a big diference between Harrier II and F-3...

Re: Eurofighter Typhoon (RAF)

A lot depends on what Germany does. If they go ahead with an additional purchase of Tranche 3B+ then I could see Spain following suit, with them buying enough for at least one possibly two squadrons. The Tranche 1s would be retained and probably go down to the Canaries to replace the EF-18s there, ...
