Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

I think we need to start a thread regarding what people think the "Strike" Brigades should look like or even extend this to the reorganisation of he Army as a whole. Yes it will be a bit fantasy fleets, but we have spent quite a while discussing what the MIV should be but unless its role i...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

mr.fred. I agree that getting the MIV actually into service and in sufficient numbers is the priority, and I am only suggesting the fitting of a auto cannon to the IFV variant. The point I am trying to make is that these vehicles are not going to be used for protected mobility, the successor to the ...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

Quite simply if you want the MIV to simply be a battlefield taxi/APC then having an M2 on a pintle mount would do or a RWS if you are feeling flush. It is an effective weapon there is no doubt about it but unless you have expensive FCS with the RWS you are not going to hit the target more often. the...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

To gain a general issue anti-tank weapon with the range suggested we would have to look at adopting something like the Eryx missile used by France and Canada. The suggestions I made for divisional level deployments would be the absolute exception to the norm, where NATO was actually attacked or a co...

Re: Your National Naval Requirement

Even better, bring back the old benchmark of being equal to the total strength of the two most powerful navies besides the UK, so adding the USN and the PLAN how many ships would we have?!

Re: Russian Armed Forces

Don't forget they have also spent quite a lot of resources re equipping the Caspian Sea Flotilla!! That is the equivalent of the USN basing FCS class vessels in the Great lakes, but then again they would probably be of more use there.

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

I would do it in reverse. Build the first T-31 with extra toys, to show what the platform can do with the remaining vessels FFBNW at best. This will show what the platform is capable off to possible buyers, of coarse upsetting the Admirals who always what the toys from the start. It does however all...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

I would actually keep our two planned Armoured Infantry Brigades in Germany. That is where they can do the most good and if needed elsewhere, the ports in Germany are well developed to allow the shipping of armour efficiently. Keeping them in Germany allows them to be moved far more quickly by road ...

Re: Aircraft storage for future use

The UK doesn't retain stocks of stored aircraft of types no longer in service. It used to with planes like the hunter back in the 1960s and 70s and plans were made to hold a number of Lightnings in storage but the plans were dropped. A different subject is storing aircraft currently in service to ex...

Re: British Army Future Wheeled APC

I have come the opinion that the longer it takes the British Army to decide on what platform to procure for the "Strike" Brigades the batter. Given time hopefully the Generals and Senior Civil Servants will actually realise that their current back of a fag packet plans for these formations...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Both France and Italy have fleets that lack many of the capabilities the RN will retain even with the introduction of the T-31. In additional we have the RFA which far surpasses the support capability of either of these navies. Yes their planned Light Frigates appear superior to the T-31 but their m...

Re: Type 31 General Purpose Frigate [News Only]

Well we are going to get what we can afford. We were never going to get a full capability but lightweight Frigate for what we had to spend. We are not going to get more OPVs and it will be more capable that the French Floreals or similar vessels. It may lack ASMs but the Rn seems to think the Wildca...

What are we actually doing with the E-3 upgrade. Ours are so far behind the upgrade curve we will need more than simply following the latest USAF programme.

Re: Mid-term review for the Strategic review?

Given all that is going on, I can see there not being a Mid-term review but rather individual decisions that may or may not be announced publically. We will probably only discover the majority of these decisions when pissed off Senior officers "leak" them to the press and even then the pre...

Re: Current & Future Amphibious Capability - General Discussion

There would be a role for the LCVP but as a follow up platform bringing in additional resources, vehicles, personnel etc. In the amphibious role the RM need to get back to raiding. Retain the ability to operate and a more conventional land force when deployed in to theater like Afghanistan as a larg...

Re: River Class (OPV) (RN)

How many "Armed" Rivers could we get for the budget, loosely allocated to the T-31 programme? If the RN concentrates on providing high end escorts of the Carrier Group exclusively, would we be better served by eight to ten "Armed" Rivers with say a 57mm, and one or two multi-role...

Re: Section infantry weapons

I understand, but I think the UK would benefit from having two or three Infantry Regiments trained to work with the Civil Authorities and support the police etc. If this were done on a permanent basis and the right training and equipment provided it would be a very useful addition to the UK's defenc...

Re: Section infantry weapons

Italy is one of the Countries the UK should be looking at, when planning its medium formation(s). They seem to be able to repeatedly do a loaves and fishes job, getting far more bang for their Euro than many nations and have a far clearer idea of where they are heading. I also wonder if we should lo...

Re: Ajax Armoured Vehicle Variants (Army)

I think the most used CVR(T) variant is now the Spartan, which replaced the FV430 series in many roles within the Armoured and Armoured Infantry units, followed by the Sultan command vehicle. Regarding the Ajax Squadron in the Armoured Regiments and the integral Recce Sections, in my mind the former...

It might be considered to be artillery but the French issue them to Infantry Regiments as are the USMC planning to do. It can be towed by a 4x4 and the MIV will certainly be able to do so as will the Bv210 and even the logistics version of the Jackal whose name I cannot remember. As I suggested I wo...

Re: Current & Future Escorts - General Discussion

The T-31 needs a hanger larger then one that will only fit a Wildcat plus the odd UAV if it is for export. The Wildcat is probably the smallest shipborne helicopter that will be in service around the world. Other nations are buying versions of the SH-60 or NH-90 or even the Super Puma. Some are stil...

Re: Section infantry weapons

I wasn't sure which had actually made it into service. I knew about the Swedish Stryx, but I believe that is fired from a standard smooth bore 120mm Mortar. I am advocating the Thomas Brandt rifled 120mm, used by many nations instead of 105mm Guns and adopted most recently by the USMC to provide hig...
